I woke up to warmth. Not the warmth I'm used to. Not the warmth from my deer skins. No, this warmth was different. It was pressed against my back, it was under my side and pressed against my stomach, and resting on my hip. Holding me in its tight embrace, I felt...safe?
But no, that can't be it, I havent felt completely safe since the day my parents were ripped from my arms. Beaten till they were broken. They were just...no more. My parents are gone, never coming back. Is that my fault? Could I have saved them from those horrible men? I felt panic bubbling up inside me.
I began shaking violently, my whole vision clouding. I can't breath. Pain. I felt it everywhere, white hot pain. Like being skinned alive.
"My fault. It's my fault. It's all my fault..." I just kept repeating the same thing over and over. While the heat burned me. Its my fault.
Then it was gone.
The warmth I felt, the warmth that had me feeling safe for the first time in years, it pulled me in, protecting me. It took away the pain.
"Shhh its ok. None of it was your fault. You're ok, you're ok. I'm here." I recognized Ryder's voice, smooth but rough. He was rubbing soothing circles into my thigh as he pulled me closer to him. His warm chest pressed against my back. He kept whispering into my ear, about how I'm going to be ok, that he's here now. What does that mean? He's going to protect me? I don't need that, not really.
It was years ago, so many years. They probably think I'm dead now. Besides I have my pack to protect me, my family. I turned the other way to face him, his hand that was on my stomach now on my back, rubbing light circles.
"Ryder?"
"Hm?"
"Why are you in my bed?"
"Do you want me to leave," he murmered quietly.
"Honestly? No, not really," I said just as quietly.
"Ok then we'll talk in the morning. Its still really early. About one or two."
"Ok. Goodnight."
Ryder chuckled quietly, "Goodnight Avery." With that I turned back the other way and closed my eyes. I felt Ryder shift behind me, then his arms were around me and he pulled me back into him. Once he got us in a comfortable position he buried his face in my neck, humming happily. I felt his lips barely brush against my neck, if I wasn't paying so much attention I wouldn't have even felt it.
But thats when I realized, I'm laying in bed naked with a man I don't even know. I really should go make him sleep with the pack. I mean, could I really trust him or is he just like the others.
His breathing became deep and even, signaling that he'd fallen asleep. I decided I'd just leave instead of making things awkward.
The second I made a movement, his arms tightened on me and pulled me even closer. "Don't leave," he whispered, his lips brushing the shell of my ear. Yeah there's no way I'm getting out of his grip without waking him.
