You could see the flickering lights through the windows of a very small house which seemed to be in a hill. You had journeyed very far from your small village in order to join a quest, or whatever it was. Rumor had spread throughout the land that Durin's folk had set out to reclaim their rightful home under the mountain, the Kingdom of Erebor. Your mother had told you many stories of what her home had been like. As a child, you would eagerly sit on her lap and listen as she spoke of great iron halls and the many tunnels and passages that would lead to magnificent mansions. She would talk about the mountain with so much longing and passion, and you could often tell how homesick she was, so you promised yourself you would find a way to bring your mother home again one day.
You saw a bearded figure walk up to the house and quickly knock. The door opened, and in the doorway you saw a small hobbit with a startled expression on his face. He had a large tuft of curly honey colored hair, and a slightly turned up nose. He seemed quite nervous about the surprise visitor who introduced himself as Balin. You couldn't make out what they were saying from your hiding place behind the bushes, but the hobbit let the dwarf in and shut the door. You passed the next few minutes wondering if you should go in yet, but were shaken out of your reverie by more voices. You looked up and saw the backs of two more dwarves who also went into the house in the hill. This happened two more times, until you were sure no one else was coming. You quietly got up and walked to the door. You tripped in your large boots and grumbled to yourself. You knew that no company would ever let a female join the quest, so you decide to masquerade as a dwarf. This was a hard task for you didn't have a beard, you were very small even for a dwarf, and you were afraid you looked quite feminine for one of your kind. You had put your long hair into a sturdy braid and smudged some dirt onto your face in hopes that it would make you look more masculine. Your fist was about to make contact with the door, when you suddenly pulled it back. A bolt of panic surged through you. You grew fearful that the dwarves would not only see through your disguise, but that they wouldn't like you. You tried to tell yourself that this didn't matter to you, for you were here because of your mom, but part of you wondered if you would become friends with any of them. Your whole life you had been a sort of outsider, because of your origins. You were the only family who was from Erebor before its downfall, and most people looked down on you for they still considered you homeless. You decided to put on a brave face and swiftly knocked on the door before your second of courage escaped you. You waited in uneasiness for what seemed like several minutes until a towering figure in a great gray cloak opened the door. "And to whom do I owe this pleasure?" asked the kind person, who you realized was the wizard Gandalf the Grey.
"M..My name's Y/N." You stuttered. "I'm here to join the quest for The Lonely Mountain."
"Ah, I see. Do come in." He beckoned with large hands. You nervously stepped through the doorway and followed Gandalf into the cozy home. The air was fragrant with the smell of pipe-weed, and you smiled at the familiarity which reminded you of home. You walked into the room and all eyes were immediately on you.
"Who is this, Gandalf?" growled a long black-haired dwarf, with a long pointed nose.
"Thorin, this is Y/N. He is going to be the newest member of our company. You nodded and turned up your lips in a small smile, trying to be friendly. Thorin did not return the sentiment, and only glared at you.
