" He what?" Caleb demands as we walk through the airport. I convinced him to leave early so that I could avoid my parents.
"You heard me." I mutter.
"God, Tris" he groans " I'm so sorry"
" why're you sorry?"
" if I had kept my mouth shut he wouldn't have bothered you" Caleb sighs.
I smack him on the head and tell him that it's okay just as my flight is called for. With a hug and a rushed goodbye, I head over to the gate and wait for them to let my class through. One of my hands clutches a suitcase and the other a crate, one filled with air holes.

A few hours later I'm outside the airport back home, waiting for the van to take me back to the lot. Once they show up, I climb in and toss my bag onto the rack and hold the other case tightly. It only takes about five minutes to get there and once I do, I thank them and start to head back to campus.I've had my phone off since last night but when I turn it on, surprisingly, there aren't any texts from Tobias. One from Al, telling me that he gave my number to ' that one really tall guy' but otherwise, nothing.
Once I'm back at my dorm, I grab my bag and the case and trudge over to my dorm. After retrieving my keys, i slide them into the lock, pushing the door open. The dorm is empty, which means that Al's out doing something so I have some time to unpack. After setting the case down, I take my bag into my room and haphazardly throw my clothes into piles. I take the few toiletries that I packed and cram them in my bathroom.
I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror, grimacing as I do. There's makeup messily applied around my eye and cheek. It's not very convincing or well done but Caleb was to hungover to catch the inconsistency in my skin tone. I've never been one for makeup of any kind, so I go to work cleaning it off my face. After I'm done i seek another glance in the mirror. Where the makeup was, an ugly purple bruise covers the right side of my face. My eyes not swollen shut but it's tender and unsightly.
My jacket slips to the floor as I shrug it from my shoulders, examining the bruises on my wrist, wrapping all the way around. My face, my wrists and the cut on my throat that I've covered with a necklace aren't going to be easy to hide.
I return to the main room, peaking into the case I brought with me. A small smile crosses my features as I glance the contents. I'll have to set that up later. But now, I really need a cup of coffee, so I walk into the kitchen and start a pot. While I wait, I lean my elbows on the counter and rest my head in my palms.
How am I going to tell Tobias that Marcus knows where he is? It's my fault that he's potentially in danger, and I can't face him and tell him that, after all my complaints, I messed up.
"Tris?" A voice behind me asks. I'm startled, so I whip around without thinking. Two simultaneous gasps fill the room. One from me, and one from Tobias. My eyes widen and I hasten to turn back around, to hide the bruises from him, but it's to late. He grabs my shoulder and whirls me around to face him. Without a word, he delicately places his hands on my cheek bone, making me wince. He takes a step back and looks me over, I don't bother hiding anything from him, he has to know.
" oh" he says in a small voice " God, Tris what happened?"
" I flew out with Caleb to meet with my parents." I pause, hesitating. " they were meant to pick us up at the airport but they didn't, someone else did."
" no, Tris no" he says, shutting his eyes.
" Caleb got drunk at dinner and mentioned you" he flinched visibly at this " I shut him up but I guess not quick enough. I went into my room and Marcus-"
" Do I really want to know what he did?" He interrupts
" I doubt it"
"Tell me" he demands shakily
" He pinned me to the wall and held a knife to my throat" Tobias's hand shoots to mine, gripping it tightly. " he got me in the eye with an elbow but I pulled a knife of my own."
" Why? What did he want?"
" what do you think? You. Where you've been. Everything and anything" I say. He steps away from me, raking his hands through his hair, before pulling me tightly to him, his large hands pressed into my back.
" Tris" he says my name shakily, seemingly to himself, like he needs to hear it.
" I'm sorry" I mumble against his chest. I can feel him shake his head above me.
"Don't be. Are you okay?" He asks, his voice tinged with worry.
" I'm fine." I mutter. My face is smashed into his chest and my voice comes out slurred. " I'm okay"
He just holds me for a minute. Grasping at me like I'm the only thing left on earth. Like if he lets me go, I'll float away. I want to tell him that i won't leave. That I'll be here for him. But I say nothing. I just snake my arms around his waist and lean into him more.
" The case in the main room" he says, breaking the silence. " What is it?"
A smile crosses my face. " I'm glad you asked." I grip his hand in mine and untangle myself from his hold, pulling him out of the kitchen. I lean him around the coffee table and kneel down with him before the crate.
"No way!" He says with a bright grin " is that-"
" Sure is" I confirm with a laugh.
