When I got home, I went straight to the little spot in the sand where the moon rose right above me and the crash of the waves soothed my nerves. My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was Miranda's mom, Robin.
Me: Hello?
Robin: Hey darlin'. How are ya?
Me: I'm working through it.
Robin: Well I just wanted to let ya know, the service is tomorrow at 7. D'you think maybe you could speak? I know Miranda would want it.
Me: Sure.
Robin: Thank you honey. I love ya and I'll see ya there.
Me: Alright I love you too. Bye.
Robin: Bye now.
I could here the pain in her voice. I began to cry as I thought about
Miranda and everything we'd gone through. Then I thought about Danny. I felt so bad. I went up to my car and drove to the gas station. I picked up a 6 pack of Longboard and drove to Danny's house. Grace was with Rachel still so I knew it was ok to go. I knocked on the front door and a minute later, Danny opened the door. When he saw me he had a pained look on his face. Without hesitation, I wrapped my arms around him as tears flowed from my eyes.
Me: I'm so sorry. I'm just... I'm...
Danny: It's ok. I promise.
Me: No. It's not ok. I...
Danny cut me off with a long passionate kiss.
When he pulled away, he looked me in the eyes and said, "I love you." My heart melted. I hugged him and as I did I said, "I love you, too." Walked upstairs together and lied down on his bed. After telling him about the funeral, we both went to sleep.
The next morning, we woke up and went to work. We didn't have a case that day so I left early to get ready for the funeral. I picked Katie up and we went home to change. I put on my old Navy uniform. I got in my car and drove to the funeral home. They were doing the funeral outside, and right after, a burial. Luckily, I had an umbrella in my trunk since it was now raining. When we got there, we talked to Robin and some of my former SEAL members. Then we sat in the front row beside Robin. A minute later, someone sat down on the other side of me. I looked over to see who it was, and I was surprised to see Danny and Grace. Also there was Steve, and Catherine, who were in their uniforms too, Kono, Chin, and Grover. I held back tears as I thought of how lucky I was to have friends like that. Miranda would've liked them. Grace walked over to me and wrapped her arms around me. I hugged her back as a couple tears slipped. She pulled away and sat in the seat between Steve and Danny. After a minute the funeral began. People said there piece. And finally, it was my turn to speak. I walked up to the tent over the coffin with my umbrella. I looked at the closed casket. I turned to face the crowd.
Me: Most of you knew her as Lieutenant Greenwood, or simply Miranda, an acquaintance, but I knew her as almost a sister, a friend, someone I could always count on, no matter what. Miranda was my family. Not by blood, but through the special bond we shared. I remember the time when we were in SEAL training. I was thinking of sneaking out, quitting, giving up. I thought to myself that I could never make it. Miranda told me that I could do anything and everything and she had no doubt I could make it. She was the one who made sure I was a SEAL. After 20 years of knowing her, I never thought something like this would happen, but I know heaven has gained one heck of angel.
I finished just before a burst of tears came. I sat down and they carried out the military portion of the service. Katie buried her head in my shoulder as she sobbed. I put my arm around her as tears ran down my face. Afterward, I hugged Danny and Grace and we all met up at Kamekona's. I thanked them all for coming and Katie and I rode home. The rest of the week carried out as normal.
It was a week since the funeral when I got a call from my mom, Staci, who'd moved back to Arizona with Sarah after the incident with Sean.
Staci: Hey!
Me: Hey mom!
Staci: I'm so glad to talk to you! How are you holding up?
Me: Pretty good actually.
Staci: Yeah I talked to Robin. She considering moving back here.
Me: That'll be good for her.
Staci: Yeah. Well, I just wanted to call you and check on you.
Me: Thanks, mom.
Staci: Bye sweetie. I love you!
Me: Love you too mom.
I hung up the phone and sat it down on my bedside table. For some reason, I could smell coffee. "That's odd," I thought to myself. I walked downstairs and saw rose petals making a path toward the kitchen. I followed the path and it led me to the table. On the table were papers, a cup of coffee, and a rose with a note attached. I read the note and it said, "Look behind you, beautiful." I turned around and there stood Danny.
Me: What are you doing here?
Danny: Drink your coffee and read those papers.
He smiled.
Me: Ok?.?.?.
I was a little skeptical. I picked up the stapled packet and began reading. It was the contract for the house on Kailani. It was signed by the realtor and Danny. He'd bought the house!!! Not only had he bought it but we were moving in next week!!! I dropped the papers and ran to him. I hugged him so tight that he couldn't breathe.
