I woke up the next day feeling really tired. I rolled out of bed, chocolate papers crinkling under my feet. I put on a simple hoodie, cami, and jeans. I didn't look at myself in the mirror, because I was too tired to care right now. I headed out for the bus after a quiet breakfast. I realized that Jessa and Shaye wouldn't be there, so I had to sit alone.
When I got to school, I moved through my classes like a zombie. By the time I got to art class, I felt completely worn out from the "spring cleaning" I had done the day before. I looked at the paper that had been handed to us. I didn't hear the teacher give the instructions. I looked at my art partner, her name was Mackenzie, I think.
"What are we supposed to be doing?" I asked her
"We're supposed to make a painting using the watercolors to portray what we think our lives are like right now."
"What are you doing?" I asked
"Well, I'm going to draw a grey block coming down about 1/4 of the way on the paper, and a big pink flower almost being crushed by it."
"What's that represent?"
"The expectations of being an art teacher's child."
"You're the art teacher's child?"
"Yup, my name's Mackenzie, but you can call me Kenz."
"Nice to meet you, I'm Lillie."
"I thought your name was Tessa, though."
"No, I guess people were mistaken." I said.
"So what are you going to do yours on?" She asked me
"I don't know, but whatever it is, it will suck."
"Why do you say that?"
"I'm not very good at art." I said. I started using the watercolors. I began simple, with a bright pink stroke in the middle. I started making that stroke into a pink flower. Then I made grey-blue flowers all around that one, and cold vines.
"What are you talking about? That is amazing!" She said.
"Thanks..." I said
"What is it supposed to represent?"
"My....umm..... pressure to be unique."
"Wow. I'm going to show ours to my mom. They will probably get hung up right outside of the classroom." I gasped. Only the really good paintings go there. I waited until she came back.
"She said that they both made it!"
"Yay!" I said
"So, we should hang out and do homework together. How about at my place? You can ride home with us." She said. I texted Vera and told her that I would be doing homework at a friend's house, she said "sure".
"Yeah, that sounds fun." I said, my energy suddenly lifting. I went to lunch with her after art, and then we parted ways until we found each other at the end of the day.
"Hey, Lils!" She said
"Hi Kenz." I said as she came up to me.
"Alright, well my mom has a red Volvo, so she'll be up here in a sec." She said, walking out of the school with me.
"Here she is!" She said, leading me to a clean, red Volvo.
"Hi, Mrs. Clark." I said
"Nice to see that Kenz finally has a friend. A real one with art skills."
"Mo-om!" Kenz said.
"Alright, alright. Let's just get home." She drove to a ranch-style house. Inside the front door, a kitchen opened to a hallway right in front. Kenz led me down the hall and to the right to her room. It was lavender colored, which I liked, and she had a daisy quilt, one which I saw in a PB teen magazine.
"Wow. I love the flowers on this." I said
"Thanks, I've always had a fascination with flowers." She said.
2 hours later...........................................................................................................................................................
"Omigawd! That's scary!" I said. Kenz and I finished our homework early and went to the computer. We were currently playing a Salem Witch Trial Midnight Mystery. Suddenly, a wolf popped onto the screen.
"AAAAAAAH!" We both screamed. Mrs. Clark ran into the room.
"What's the matter?" She said
"Th-the wolf!" We said, pointing to the screen.
"Okay." She said. She was currently making us hamburgers. We continued until we finished. The hamburgers were waiting for us. We ate, and then someone called.
"Hello?" Mrs. Clark said
"Yes, I'm sure she can....well are you sure she has to?......A family funeral? How sad....Bye." Mrs. Clark said
"Your Aunt Vera said to come home because some great-grandfather had died? I'm so sorry. I'll drive you home."
"Thank you, Mrs. Clark." I said. I gave Kenz a hug and got into the Volvo. We drove home.
"You live here?" She asked pulling into the drive way of the mansion-style home.
"Yes..." I said, my face flushing.
"Well, feel free to stop by any time." She said
"Thank you, Mrs. Clark."
I walked into the house.
"Where were you?"
"At a friend's house." I said
"Don't get too-"
"I know, Vera. I know." I said. I went upstairs and fell asleep.
