There wasn't a breath that Teresa took that I didn't watch. I was the one with the gun to her head this time. She held the scalpel in one hand and poked at the back of Fi's neck with the other.

Even with a gun to her head, I wasn't entirely sure Teresa wouldn't do something drastic. Her fingers rubbed Fiona's upper spine, looking for the best place to cut. After a few seconds, she abruptly stopped, "It's not here."

"What do you mean?" Gally questioned, debating if she was serious or if the WCKD scientist wanted to leave it in to get Fiona executed.

"You should feel a bump under her skin, the size of a pill. Fiona felt her own neck, finding nothing.

I searched myself, not taking any chances, never finding the bump I feel in my own neck. Now that I know it's there, it lives like a bug bite. Continuously reminding me it's haunting me.

"How did you get it out?" Teresa asks her.

"I didn't." Fi shook her head, her serious eyes bouncing between Gal and I, "I had no idea about it."

All equally confused, glances came from the other Gladers. All our bug bites were easy to find and irritating our every moment.

"It must have been taken out before my memories were erased." She tried to find some clarity.

Teresa sat up straighter, a small act that didn't go unnoticed by Gally. "What, traitor?"

Teresa glared darkly at him. He knew she hated name-calling. My chest swelled with pride. I wasn't the only one who couldn't forgive so easily. "WCKD took the software out of my neck after the maze. They implanted a different device into my arm to allow me access and clearance in the city."

Jorge grumbled. "Trading one prison for another."

Teresa rolled her eyes. "They were prepping you, same as me, to work as a scientist."

Blue rolled up her sleeve, looking at the little device in her arm. "WCKD put it there after we felt the maze, they said it was a form of birth control."

"What the shuck is birth control?" Fry teased with a rosy-cheeked smile.

"Once upon a time, before the flare, there was a Lady Doctor called a gynecologist-"

Brenda was quick to stop the conversation. "Does Jorge need to give all of you the birds and bees talk? Seriously?"

Every once in a while, I could tell our lack of memories stunned her. She had memories from before. Not many, as she was so young when the flare wiped out the human race. But enough to know that he had family. Family that wasn't us. One that we could never truly replace. Whether we would like to admit it or not, that was a wall we could not overcome. Despite our developed loyalty to each other. She would never be a Glader and we would never be her kin. But it was never our intention to replace those we lost.
