"You've been acting strange, you know?" Kyle peered at Ammon's face closely, but he was barely listening. Ammon was staring outside the stained window, longing for the ride to end. Orange and brown leaves tumbled along the busy footpath, dragged by the autumn wind. Kids clustered in groups were walking with smiles on their faces and earbuds shoved in their ears. Ammon snapped into focus when Kyle began poking his cheek with his finger. "What do you want?" Ammon grumbled, his voice barely audible. The bus was full of noisy school kids eager to get home. Ammon wasn't interested in talking, but Kyle didn't seem to take the hint. "Guess what?" he said eagerly, his hazel eyes staring at Ammon beneath his blonde curls. "I don't know, got an A in English?" Ammon said with shrug. A scowl covered Kyle's face before he instantly started rummaging through his school bag, crumpled pieces of paper spilling out on the sides. "Look at this!" His face couldn't conceal his excitement. Shoving a piece of paper in Ammon's face, Ammon realised from first glimpse this was a note. Plucking it with his thumb and index finger, Ammon flipped the small, tightly folded smudged paper with Kyle leaning in uncomfortably close with an eager smile. "Guess who wrote it?" he said, his voice high pitched in thrill. Kyle looked into Ammon's eyes like a crazed kid in a candy store, high on sugar. Ammon frowned and pushed Kyle back slightly with his hand in fear of safety. "Dude, calm down. Did the Queen write to you?" Before Ammon could open the note, Kyle sighed in pain. "No! Olivia wrote it!" he hissed, another smile playing on his lips. "She wrote to me in English." He fell back in his seat, a dreamy sigh escaping his smiling lips, his eyes staring into space. Ammon usually would've given him a high five or said something stupid, but he wasn't feeling in the mood. "Of course, should've known," he said to himself. Rolling his eyes, he opened the note and frowned. "Uh, Kyle," Ammon pushed his unusually quiet friend on the arm. "Yea."
"You have read the note, right?" Kyle sighed like a love struck Romeo. "Yep."
"And you understood what it said?"
"Memorised it in my head and heart." Ammon pitied his friend. Quite a few girls fancied Kyle, and he didn't even blink at them. However, the one girl he did manage to like had to be the one that barely knew he existed. This note must've been gold to Kyle. "She said, 'You have a spider on your back." Ammon glanced at Kyle, but he didn't appear to be listening. "That wasn't romantic dude, you gotta chill." Olivia was a pretty, kind and smart girl. Kyle describes her voice being as 'sweet as honey'. She only pays attention to her school work and small group of friends though, no matter how charming and funny Kyle tries to be in class. He's never spoken to her directly however; he isn't brave enough. Ammon carefully folded the note back up again, not wanting to ruin the delicate, neat handwriting. He placed it in Kyle's hand, who continued to smile like an idiot. Ammon opened his mouth to say something like 'she didn't ask you to prom' but Kyle was looking so peacefully and happily into the bus's ceiling that Ammon decided not to. "Good job Kyle," was all he said. When Ammon got home, he walked straight to his bedroom and flung his tattered, torn bag across the neat and organised room. He turned around, only to hear a loud thump, making him look carefully at his bag. That was when he remembered the extra books he had been carrying inside. Taking the books out of his bag, Ammon plonked himself onto his carefully made bed and spread the thick books around him. He sighed to himself, not wanting to read any of them, but he grabbed the closest one and opened it. "I could be reading my own book right now," he mumbled while scanning the tiny text. The book was about how to ward off evil spirits, which Ammon found ridiculous. However, he leant his head into his hand and continued to read, not wanting to disappoint Ruby, the girl who was crazy enough to kidnap him in the library. "Pour three teaspoons of vinegar into the bowl while mixing the liquid indium and gallium," he read doubtfully from the page. Ammon tossed the book aside and grabbed another. "Pft, like as if people have gallium and indium lying around." As Ammon turned the first page, a slip caught his eye. It was the stamp sheet which records the dates that the book had been borrowed. Nobody would borrow this book, or even go that far back into the library, Ammon thought to himself. The date 12/Oct/15 was stamped with fresh blue ink. It was the only date in the book, which meant Ammon was the first person to borrow the book from all the years it was in the school. Strangely, Ammon felt slightly sorry for the book, but he quickly pushed the thoughts away and smacked his forehead. "First you smell books, and now you have feelings for them. Get a grip," he scolded himself. As he read the second book, the text actually caught his attention, and he didn't feel so bored. It was about haunted houses in history, which struck his mind. "Dead people and houses that mysteriously get set on fire. Cool."
It was getting late, and Ammon hadn't budged from his spot on the bed. Every now and then, he would scratch his dark brown hair, but that was it. As he closed his fourth book, he tossed it behind him and went to grab another random book. This is my last book for today. The book was small and fit comfortably in his hands, unlike the others which were large like encyclopaedias and school textbooks. 'Curses and other Black Magic.' Ammon's eyes squinted in confusion as he looked at the date slip. In fresh blue ink, the date 12/Oct/15 was stamped into the sheet. However, for all the other books, that was the only date. This book was different. Above Ammon's date was another date stamped into the sheet. The ink was black and stood out hauntingly on the thin paper. He held the book with shaking hands and focused on the numbers that stood marked in the book.
'11/Oct/15' the date read.
