Enjoy!Ammon turned around at the sound of the teacher's footsteps, relief washing over him as he could escape from the whimpering voice of Chatterbox Brody. However, the person he saw walk through the door was not who he was expecting. It wasn't the stern, harsh Mrs Jones, with cold blue eyes, a tight neat bun and a fiery temper. A completely different teacher stepped into the dreary, old classroom. Ammon grinned. Any teacher can beat Mrs Jones. Yes! No wolf today! It was a male, and the first thought that came to Ammon's mind when he saw him was human pencil. His eyebrows shot up as he took in the height of the man before him. The teacher was tall and towered over all the students like a giant. He had to duck his head as he walked through the battered door. Not only was he incredibly tall, he was incredibly skinny, just like a pencil. His long arms and legs were nothing but thin twigs and his fingers stretched out like spider legs. The glasses on his gentle face were round, and his hair was barely visible, only a soft wisp of brown. "I'm afraid your teacher was unable to make it to class today," the teacher began, his voice deep, smooth and warm, "I will be taking over until she is able to teach again." He turned around, bending down to pick a black marker before scribbling messily on the board. "My name is Mr Coleman. Hopefully I will be able to know all of your names by the end of the lesson."
"Excuse me Mr Coleman" a voice called out from the back of the class. "Yes," he replied, not turning away from the board. "Where is Mrs Jones?" Curiosity suddenly filled Ammon's mind as he wondered the same thing. The tall man turned around, his eyes slowly scanning the room. "From what I have heard, your teacher is just suffering from a bit of shock, that's all. Nobody is quite sure what the sudden surprise is however, she wouldn't explain." As the teacher turned around, a few glances and whispers went around the room. Ammon stared blankly at the wall, lost in his thoughts. Nobody is quite sure. Well, nobody besides this entire class. Ammon felt chills go up his spine.
"Class, I need to confess something to you all." All eyes were on Mr Coleman, or rather, looking up to him. The teacher's voice was calm and smooth. Plucking the round glasses from his nose, Mr Coleman leaned his tall frame casually against the wall while wiping away marks from his lenses. The sound of Luana scribbling notes into her book was the only noise that could be heard in the room. "I am no history teacher, and I cannot bear the thought of teaching such a dreaded subject for 50 minutes." On the outside, Ammon just watched Mr Coleman, but on the inside of Ammon's head, a mental party was taking place, with colourful fireworks exploding and happy cheering bursting with victory. "Therefore, since I am in charge, I get to choose what I wish to teach," he said with a slight bit of tease in his warm voice. Pushing himself from the wall, the teacher jumped up slightly with an eager look in his eyes. "The human body."
The noisy fireworks exploding wildly in Ammon's head suddenly crackled away, and the cheering silenced. What? The human body? A wide grin spread across the teacher's calm face, and maybe even the hint of excitement. "Did you know," he began enthusiastically "within three days of death, the acids that once digested your dinner begin to eat your body?" He walked briskly to the left, hands tightly clasped together. "To all the girls in this room who obsess over their eye lashes, I think you'd love to know that there are these amazing microscopic mites that live amongst them." A few eyes swivelled to Fiona who sat at the back with a disgusted look on her face. "Excuse me sir, that is gross and totally not real." She flicked back her straightened, honey-brown hair with a perfectly manicured hand, waiting for a response. Ammon expected Mr Coleman to look offended, but instead, he smiled warmly, his eyes filled with knowledge and wisdom. "Why, they are called Demodex, and there are around 65 different types of them." The teacher paused and sighed. "Such fascinating creatures they are." Ammon shifted comfortably in his seat. Turns out this may be an interesting lesson after all. He knew that the teacher had absorbed the rest of the class in his speech as well - besides Fiona, whose attention span was smaller than the amount of brain she actually uses. Students leaned forward with hands in their hands, waiting for more information. Even Luana looked up from her book and watched the teacher carefully. "The human eye is such an amazing organ. The sensitivity and accuracy is absolutely exquisite." Mr Coleman spoke in his smooth, deep voice with such passion that it drew the whole class in. "If the Earth were flat, the human eye would be able to pick up the light of a flickering candle 48 kilometres away." A few soft gasps drifted in the room. "This is probably one of my most favourite facts," Mr Coleman said softly, the small wrinkles on his face creasing near his gentle and intelligent eyes. He leaned forward on his desk, using his long and skinny arms to support him. "How many of you like fruits?" A few hands awkwardly rose. "Did you know that humans share 50% of their DNA," he paused for a bit before continuing, "with bananas?" The class was stunned for a few seconds, but then began talking all at once.
"That is so cool sir!"
"Are you sure you aren't making this up?"
The teacher chuckled before raising his hands to silence the class. "The human body is a magical thing students. Scientists still have hundreds of mysteries to unlock, even with the advanced knowledge and technology we have." Mr Coleman sunk slowly into his seat, resting his hands behind the back of his head. "You need to look after yourselves, care for all the muscles, organs and cells that work tirelessly to keep you alive. Eat your fruits and veges, stay away from drugs, you know, all that sort of stuff." He sighed, and Ammon was struck with curiosity as he thought he saw a flicker of sadness in the teacher's eyes. However, the sorrow quickly disappeared. "But, besides looking after yourself, I think it's great to do a bit of research on your body. There is some splendid things about yourselves that will leave you thinking about it for days." The class fell into a comfortable silence, sinking in what the teacher just told them. "I think that's enough chitchat for one day," the teacher suddenly spoke, "class, I declare the rest of the lesson as free time."
