Sweat lined Ammon's forehead as he ran to the library from the other end of the school. The cold morning air whipped his face as he panted heavily. Even with his strong, tall build, which was opposite to Kyle's short one, Ammon was no sports person, and the sudden exercise was wearing him out. His bag thumped heavily on his back, which didn't help him at all. As he reached the large building, he placed his bag on a clean seat and took out all the thick books inside. A few kids stared at him strangely, but he didn't pay attention. He carefully placed the books into the 'return box' and walked briskly out. I need to talk to Ruby, was all he could think. Ammon didn't want to look for her though, as he didn't want anyone to get the wrong idea. He decided to play it cool, and just wait for the blonde girl to randomly pass by. Besides, it's not that important. Ammon tried not to make it a big deal, but the date kept popping in his head. What are the chances? Who would borrow that book from the library for only a day? The day before that creepy box was found? He dodged a banana peel as he continued to walk quickly. Because Ammon dropped off the heavy books, he was going to be late for class. I should've just kept them in my bag a little longer, he scolded himself. Tucked under his arm was the 'different' book. It was the one about curses and black magic, the one that was borrowed a day before Ammon. He didn't end up reading it, but he was definitely planning to. After he discovered the stamped date in the sheet, his mother called him down for dinner, and the smell of lasagne dragged him out of the room. A delicious smell that no one could resist.
As Ammon walked into his second class, which was history, he realised something. Besides Fiona and her snobby friend who seemed unintimidated by yesterday's incident, not a single kid sat in the back row. The boxes were still messily clumped in scattered piles. One box, however, stood out from the rest. It was the shoebox. Placed carefully on the shelf above the boxes, it didn't fit in with the books around it, but it still sat fearlessly, daring someone to touch it. Since the whole back row was unoccupied, besides the two girls, the front of the class was full, and there was only one seat that wasn't in the back. Ammon took it without a second thought. Sliding onto the cold, plastic seat, he waited patiently, along with the rest of the class, for the teacher to arrive. A few whispers drifted in the room, but that was it. Ammon dreaded history. He found it boring, useless and hard to remember. Having a vicious wolf as a teacher didn't brighten the situation either. To his left was a girl he recognised as Luana. He had never spoken to her, but he knew she was a serious and quiet girl who kept to herself. In fact, Ammon didn't recall a moment where he had actually heard her speak to anyone beside teachers. She scribbled notes in her book with a focused look on her face, her wavy, brown hair tied back into a braid.
"Pst!" Ammon turned around and saw Ruby behind him, her head low and eyes gleaming. "Find anything?" she whispered with a hushed voice. Ruby looked so excited like she was ready to bounce off her seat any minute. Her enthusiasm slightly scared Ammon, but he found it intriguing. "Look at the borrowed slip at the front" he whispered back, passing the book behind him for her to see. He wasn't exactly sure if it was 'evidence' or anything useful, and he worried if he was making a big deal out of a date. The boy beside Ruby looked at us with an observant stare, and Ammon felt uncomfortable at the watcher. "Is that for yesterday?" he whispered, eyes darting between the two students. Black curls dangling from his forehead bounced in front of his chubby face. Ammon groaned inwardly. He recognised this person, and he did not like him at all. His name was Brody, the most talkative person in the world. "Yes. We are trying to solve the mystery, or at least learn to keep safe from ghosts while we do so." Ammon gave Ruby a glare, warning her not to talk to him, but she didn't see it. Brody leaned over, watching from Ruby's shoulder at the book in her hands. He used a greasy hand to wipe away the snot from his nose, then smudged it onto his shorts. Ammon winced. "11th of October?" Ruby mumbled, her brows scrunched in thought. "That's only two days ago. That means the person only borrowed it for the day. Strange, very strange." She looked up at Ammon with a frown. "Did you read it? Find anything interesting?" Ammon shook his head. "I was going to, but then-"
"Do you really think the toy is cursed?" Brody interrupted, his eyes filled with worry. "I don't think it is," Ammon replied, partly annoyed, "I'm just helping Ruby out." He was only half convinced, but he didn't want to let it show. Body opened his mouth to say more, but the teacher walked through the door, and for the first time ever, Ammon was actually glad to see Mrs Jones.
