After practice, we had lunch. I looked up from my lunch to see Mike staring at me with soft eyes. I smiled and he blushed, and then looked down.
He was so damn cute.
I looked around at all of them. Billie was 'writing', but he wasn't even actually writing. His black hair was in his eyes, and he was leaning on his hand. He was wearing all black, down to te shoes. Why wasn't he wearing a jacket? I looked to his right, and Mike was talking to Tré. He was all in black too, but he was wearing a leather jacket. Obviously he had the sense to wear one. I hadn't. I looked to the right, next to me. Tré was laughing at something Mike had said. He wasn't wearing a jacket either, but he was wearing a colourful shirt with green checked pants. They matched his green hair. I shivered. It was freezing in this hall. I suddenly wished I'd had sense, like Mike, and brought a jacket. I shivered and Mike looked up.
"You okay?" He asked. I nodded.
"Yeah. Just chilly." I said, and he nodded and finished his lunch. He stood up and took his rubbish over to the bin, but walked around the hall a different way to come back, stopping behind me and draping his leather jacket over my shoulders.
"Oh Mike, you don't have to." I said, and he laughed.
"I want you to be warm." He said. I smiled, looking into his eyes.
"Thank you," I said, and he nodded.
"No problem." Mike said. I saw Billie looking at us. He looked hurt actually. Why? What's up with him?
"I have to go study," Mike said, and stood up.
"Science?" I asked, and he nodded.
"Me too. I'll come with you," I dumped my trash in the bin and followed him down to the library. We sat across from each other. We were meant to be reading from a textbook and then making notes. I looked at the unit of study.
Reproduction. Fantastic topic to talk to Mike about...
I read from the book and wrote stuff down, like I was supposed to, but when I looked up, Mike had his head in his hands.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"I don't get it. Why make it so complicated. It just goes into my head and straight out again." Mike muttered.
"Yet you remember basslines?" I asked.
"Science has always been a bad subject for me. Especially all this 'reproduction' shit." He said.
"It's not that hard." I said.
"That's what she said." Mike said, not missing a beat. I got the joke and laughed. "I mean, why all the words to remember? People fuck, that's about it." Mike said.
"Michael!" I said, shocked, but I felt my face going red. Maybe because Mike was talking about sex.
"It's true!" He replied, and I kicked him under the table. He grinned and kicked me back. I decided to teach him a lesson. I 'kicked' him, and by that, I mean I ran my foot up his leg. He turned bright red and shifted in his seat.
"You okay Mike?" I asked, pretending I had no idea. He looked at me, with a look I've never seen before. His eyes were a shade darker. He nodded and cleared his throat.
"I'm good." He smirked, and we shut our books and went outside, and Mike took me to a place he likes to sit when he doesn't want to see any people. It was nice and secluded, and quiet. Which meant I could actually have a conversation with Mike. I sat on the bench, and he jumped up next to me, accidentally laying his hand on top of mine. He removed it straight away.
"Sorry." He said.
"Don't be," I replied softly, and I put my hand over his. He smiled at me, and then I realised we were both leaning in.
Okay, no big deal. I'd kissed a boy before. But what he said next did surprise me.
"I've never kissed a girl before," He said, close to my face, our eyes staring into each others.
"Seriously? Even I've kissed a boy." I said, and he smiled.
"I never get a chance to talk to girls, what with the band and everything. And then we do practice, like every-" He said.
"Mike?" I interrupted him.
"Hmm?"
"Stop talking." I leant in and my lips met his for the first time. He seemed alarmed, but then he kissed me back. We were cruelly torn apart though.
"Well, then." Said a voice.
Billie Joe.
Mike jumped off me and smiled at Billie.
"Hey Beej." He said.
"Oh fuck you." Billie snapped, and then he ran faster than I've ever saw him run, into a building that I knew was a part of the school, but I'd never been into.
"What the hell was that about??" I asked Mike.
"Beats me," He replied. He was still smiling like an idiot, cute.
"Imma go talk to him. Stay here." I said, standing up.
"Okay," He replied softly.
And so I began my hunt for Billie Joe Armstrong.
