Alan did not announce his intention the moment he returned.
He waited.
Not because he was afraid but because he understood something now that he hadn't before:
this conversation was not about convincing.
It was about standing.
Maria noticed the change before he spoke a word.
There was a steadiness in him an almost reverent quiet. The way he listened more than usual. The way he touched her shoulder as if grounding both of them. The way his eyes carried something settled, something decided.
She didn't ask.
Healing had taught her that not every truth needs to be chased. Some arrive when ready.
When Alan finally asked both families to meet, his voice was calm.
"I want to talk," he said simply. "All of us."
No dramatics.
No defensiveness.
Just presence.
They gathered in a neutral space not Maria's childhood home, not Alan's somewhere intentionally in between. A quiet living room, afternoon light filtering through pale curtains, tea growing cold on untouched tables.
Maria sat beside Alan, fingers loosely intertwined with his.
She was nervous but not fragile.
That mattered.
Elena watched them enter together.
Not clinging.
Not hiding.
Together.
It unsettled her more than anger ever had.
Maria looked... different.
Not defiant.
Not rebellious.
rooted.
Elena felt something unfamiliar twist in her chest.
She's not asking for permission, she realized suddenly.
She's asking to be seen.
And that frightened her.
While Richard noticed something else.
Alan didn't rush.
Didn't dominate the room.
He greeted them respectfully, met his eyes steadily, and waited—truly waited—for silence to settle before speaking.
That alone shifted something in Richard.
This wasn't a boy pleading.
This was a man prepared to take responsibility.
"I'm not here to argue," Alan began.
His voice didn't waver but it wasn't rigid either.
"I'm not here to tell you that you were wrong, or that your fears don't come from love."
Elena stiffened slightly.
"But I am here," he continued, "to tell you that I want to marry your daughter."
Silence.
Alan didn't fill it.
He turned slightly toward Maria not possessively, but with quiet acknowledgment.
"I want to marry her knowing who she is.
And knowing what she carries."
He looked back at them.
"She's not broken.
But she has been hurt."
