Maria had been waiting for the perfect moment to talk to her parents. The excitement of the interview had been building inside her like a fire she could barely contain. She knew that this opportunity was life-changing—not only was it her dream job, but it would also bring her closer to Alan. All she needed now was her parents' support.
That evening, after dinner, Maria found her parents in the living room. Her father was settled into his armchair with a newspaper, while her mother was finishing a knitting project, a small smile playing on her lips as she concentrated. It was the perfect time, she thought. They were both in a good mood.
Maria took a deep breath and went for it.
Maria: (cheerfully) “Mom, Dad, I have some exciting news!”
Her mother, Elena, looked up from her knitting, her face lighting up.
Elena: “Oh? What’s the big news, dear?”
Her father, Richard, glanced over the top of his newspaper, his expression curious but calm.
Richard: “Well, don’t keep us in suspense. What’s going on?”
Maria, her heart pounding, took a seat across from them and began to explain.
Maria: “So, remember how I’ve been thinking about some new opportunities? Well, I applied for a position with this amazing publishing company... and I got an interview! It’s my dream job! But... it’s in another city.”
The atmosphere in the room shifted almost instantly. Elena’s smile faltered, and Richard lowered his newspaper completely, his brow furrowing.
Elena: (concerned) “Another city? Maria, are you serious?”
Richard: (sternly) “What city are we talking about here?”
Maria swallowed, feeling the weight of their disapproval before she even gave them the details.
Maria: “It’s in London. It’s a great opportunity, Mom, Dad. The company is one of the best in the industry, and I’ve been wanting to work there for years. This is my chance.”
Her parents exchanged worried glances, and Maria could sense the battle forming before her eyes.
Elena: (frowning) “London is so far, Maria. How will you manage everything on your own? You’ve built your life here. What about your stability? Your family?”
Richard: (gruffly) “You’re really going to uproot yourself for a job? What about your future here? What happens when things don’t work out?”
The barrage of questions hit Maria like a wave, but she was determined to stand her ground. She knew her parents were protective, but this was important to her.
Maria: (firmly) “This isn’t just any job, Dad. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! I’ve been working toward something like this for years. And yes, it’s far, but I’m ready for it. I can take care of myself.”
Elena: (softly) “But why now, Maria? Why leave everything behind?”
Maria: (taking a deep breath) “It’s not about leaving everything behind, Mom. It’s about growing, taking the next step in my career. This job will give me the recognition and experience I’ve been working so hard for. And... it’ll bring me closer to Alan.”
There it was—the truth she had been holding back. The mention of Alan seemed to change the tone of the conversation completely. Elena and Richard exchanged another look, and Maria could see the tension between them deepen.
Richard: (with a sigh) “So, it’s about him too, isn’t it? You want to move for the job, but you’re also thinking about being closer to Alan. Don’t let personal feelings cloud your judgment, Maria. This is your life we’re talking about.”
Maria felt a pang of frustration. She loved her parents dearly, but sometimes it felt like they couldn’t see the bigger picture.
Maria: (determined) “I’m not making this decision lightly, Dad. Alan is a part of my life, yes, but this job... this is for me. It’s about my dreams and my future. I’ve thought about this a lot. I wouldn’t even consider it if I didn’t think it was the right move.”
There was a long pause. The room felt thick with tension, and Maria could feel her heart racing. She waited, hoping her parents would understand.
