Nine
Two weeks after Aging Day I had retired from learning, said bye to all my friends (including Zari) and started working, I was even used to the thought that my brother was gone for good. But I had to thank Kane for all of this. He was what kept me going. He knew what it was like to lose someone you loved because he had lost his little brother a few years before, so he was able to comfort me and still give me enough space for me to heal my aching heart. I was really thankful that of all people I could be matched with, the government matched me with him. I was perfectly fine with being his girlfriend; the only thing holding me back was my grief, which slowly, eventually, crept away.
At the end of Dimonth when I was pretty much as good as new, Kane decided to take me out for dinner. After calling the government to open our doors, we met at the local park.
“Hey,” he said, getting up from a swing as I approached him.
“Hi,” I smiled. He kissed me on the lips, which I was still a bit iffy about because it made me think of Jem, and how—just like him—I actually found myself genuinely loving the guy I was matched with.
When we broke apart he offered me his hand—which I took—and asked, “Shall we?”
He took me to the town Dairy Bar, which was the cutest place I think I’ve ever eaten at in my life. The servers wore rollerblades, poodle skirts, and clean white shirts, with a pink bandana tied around their necks. There was a large jukebox in the corner, which didn’t even work so they played music through the store speakers, using the jukebox as decoration. The place was designed to look like ancient restaurants, with the light colors; the short stools lined up against the counter; the black and white floor tiles; the small sitting booths; and of course, the painting and signs hung up on all the walls. Like I said, cutest place to eat.
Kane sat me down at a table next to a window and signaled one of the servers over.
“Hello, welcome to Bessie’s Dairy Bar, what would you like today?” she asked.
Looking up from the menu I said, “Whatever you think tastes best.”
“My favorite would be a chocolate milkshake with fries and our special sandwich,” she told me.
“Then I’ll take it.”
The server wrote this down on her notepad and turned to Kane, “and you sir, what would you like today?”
“Whatever she’s having,” he said pointing at me.
“So two chocolate shakes, fries and specials?” she checked.
“That’d be about right,” Kane smiled.
“Coming right up,” the server nodded.
“So how’s work?” Kane asked me as the server rolled off.
“It’s fine, nursing the sick isn’t too bad. I’m learning a lot that I haven’t known before though.”
“That’s good.”
