Twelve

After eating our lunch in the midst of many other people eating their lunches, we met up with who seemed to be Carrie. She sent Jem off to the Healing Building (which was to them called a hospital) to see about his burn. She then brought Kane and I to the third floor of some other building. At the very end of the hall she opened a door to a room.

“Is this okay for you?” Carrie asked us about the room she set up for Kane, Jem and I.

The room was small and cozy, with two twin-sized beds and a sofa bed. The walls were a beige color, and there was a single window letting light flood in. there was a dresser in the corner with a lamp and digital clock on top. The smell of the bed sheets filled our noses, after having just been washed.

“It’s fine,” Kane thanked her.

Right before Carrie was going to leave I grabbed her arm and asked, “Do you know anything about my mother? If not, can you bring someone who can explain things to me?”

“I understand,” Carrie said, “I’ll go find someone who can explain things more thoroughly.”

“Okay, thanks.”

“So your brother’s not dead, he’s actually your slave; there’s this whole world outside of the walls of Zenith; and your mother is apparently not dead either.” Kane summed up after Carrie had left. “That’s a lot to take in in two days time.”

“Yeah,” I said sitting down on one of the beds. I rested my head on my hands and my elbows on my knees. I wasn’t sure that I could deal with any more surprises. Kane sat next to me on the bed and when I rested my head on his shoulder he started stroking my hair. We sat like this until there was a knock on the door.

“Come in!” Kane called. The door opened and a familiar face popped in through the opened space.

“Able!” I jumped knocking Kane back.

“Liza!” she cried back running over for a hug.

“You’re all right!” I said looking her over. “The teacher told us that the leader chose to send you away. Carlos freaked and was carried out. Oh my God! Do you think Carlos is okay?” I asked, remembering after almost three months of forgetting about him.

Able’s expression saddened. “I’m not sure about what happened to him, I’m assuming he was turned into a slave like your brother, but we’ll never know unless that mask is taken off. Which, as you know, is very rare to see happen in front of other people.”

“Oh,” I said gloomily. “Able,” I called silently. She looked up at me, “I really think he liked you.”

“He did,” she said so matter-of-factly. “We loved each other.” I felt very bad for her, I couldn’t imagine going through this without Kane, it must’ve been horrible for Able who wasn’t even paired with him, so all the meeting they did have, had to be in secret. “But anyway,” she said trying to sound cheerier. “I came to explain things to you, so that’s what I’ll do!”

From lunch until dinner Able sat telling us every little detail about what happened and what was going on. I wont bore you with hours of the real conversation, so I’ll just tell you a summarized version.

After the fourth World War Louis Clark, the first Leader, decided that he should take over things to ensure that what happened in the past wouldn’t happen again. At first it sounded like a good idea so everyone was okay with it, but then the government started shaping itself into what it is now. There were many refugees who fled Zenith and moved to what they call Autonomia, which is spread out and surrounding Zenith. When women were banished they would join the Autonomians, forming a whole new country really. The government in Autonomia is similar to that of the twenty-first century. Here people voted for their leader and got to do whatever it is they wanted while still being controlled. The Autonomians have used technology that our ancestors have left behind, outdated but still amazing. Turns out that there are satellites somewhere up in the sky picking up signals from what is called Cellphones. It’s quite interesting.

Over the years the Autonomians have been planning a rebellion, but as time carried on, people just started to care less, Zenith seemed more of a myth to them. Though they had weapons, they never really bothered doing anything because they didn’t know what they were up against. So Zenithians have been struggling to survive happily while they have been living free. Until one day when my father found out about Autonomia. He spread word in Zenith and soon he and my mother were organizing an escape for many Zenithians. The government found out about it though, and on Aging Day last year, when they were asked to be held back to speak to the Leader, they weren’t killed; they were punished. My mother was forced to watch my father be turned into a slave. They cut off his tongue, wiped some flammable liquid (which Autonomians call gasoline) onto his head and held his face in front of flames. They held his face down for too long, causing my father to die from third degree burn. My mother was then shot and banished from Zenith.

She found her way around the forest before she couldn’t stand anymore, that’s when two Autonomian hunters found her and brought her to safety. When word got around in Zenith that Susan and Maurice had died the escape was forgotten. Since then, Autonomians have become more serious about the rebellion. Only half a year later, many more have found their way to Autonomia from Zenith, claiming that Jem had revived our parents’ plan. I asked her how Jem had found out, and she explained to me that people believe that after having worked in the government, he came across some classified files about what really happened to his parents and many others.

After hearing all of this, everything made more sense to me. All those times that Jem randomly seemed serious about something but wouldn’t tell me, all those people who “died” or were “sent away”. My brother knew, and all those missing people were the one’s who fled. One other thing that I understood was that we finally had hope.

“Wait,” I said to Able right before we were heading down to dinner, “that guy, the one who had supposedly killed my parents. Who was he?”

“We believe that he was in on the plan, but we’ll never know.”
