The Incomplete World Of Elmore

Part 29

~Elmore Jr High Entrance

The back of Elmore Junior High was shrouded in a mysterious, late-evening silence—where the school lights flickered like tired eyes and the asphalt still held the warmth of the night, something else, too, threaded between them: a palpable sense of mischief.

Loki stood beneath a busted security lamp, half in shadow. He was dressed like a walking contradiction—black, white, and gray jester hat hanging low over his skull-shaped mask, a gray bow tie sitting neatly above a pressed shirt, polished shoes that glimmered oddly under the flickering light. The smile painted into the skull's expression seemed to stretch wider with each move. It was the kind of mask that appeared to be laughing at you, not with you.

Before him stood Clayton, the red shapeshifting ball, trembling slightly in the gravel, an apparent tension hanging in the air between him and Loki, like a taut wire ready to snap.

"Wait, why do I have to—"

Clayton's protest was cut short as Loki's gloved hand covered his mouth. Not abruptly. Calmly. Almost tenderly.

"Listen," Loki said, his voice smooth, pleasant even, but with something sharp beneath it. "Judah is going to be here tonight. I, on the other hand, have somewhere essential to be-something that could change everything. Which means," he tilted his head, smile invisible but deeply felt, "I need you to handle a favor for me." His tone hinted at hidden agendas.

Clayton's eyes widened like cracked marbles, darting past Loki's shoulder. Behind them, Julius's old crew stood in a loose half-circle—lurking, waiting, watching—shadows with fists.

"...Okay," Clayton muttered, the word thin and small, the kind that collapses on itself as soon as it's spoken.

Loki patted him on the head as though congratulating him for making the correct choice. Then he turned, jester bells chiming softly, and walked toward the building's entrance. The bullies, silent and efficient, rolled Clayton forward like cargo.

The school doors loomed ahead, glowing with the haze of party lights beyond them.

Carmen is visibly anxious at the school entrance, clutching her bag tightly, her knuckles white, while Penny gently squeezes her arm, offering a calm, steady presence. The glow of party lights flickers through the windows behind them, casting shifting shadows. "Okay, I'll go to the dance and during the dance ask him out.. I can't do this, I can't do this, I gotta go home, I gotta go home-!" Carmen's voice trembles with nerves, her eyes darting around as she fights the urge to run away, while Penny's steady touch grounds her in the moment and gives her courage.

"Carmen, calm down. Look, I don't like the guy; in fact, I hate him as much as Tobias does, and I think you can do better. As a friend, you should try to talk to him and express your feelings. This dance is a break from all the chaos from last week, and you deserve to be happy, so go and ask him out." Penny

"Alright, I'll do it in a grand romantic gesture." Carmen runs into the school but stops for a minute because she has a headache.

"...Do what you like." (I hate grand romantic gestures and hope my boyfriend won't do that. If I had one.)." Penny walks over to her, offers her some water to stay hydrated, and they continue walking into the school.

A police car smoothly came to a stop, its sleek black body gleaming under the streetlights. Gumball was the first to step out, dressed in a sharply tailored gray tuxedo that looked almost too perfect, his face hidden behind a skull mask with hollow eye sockets that gave his usually bright face a strangely serious, practically eerie look. Next to him, Aphrodite stepped out barefoot, her flowing green dress splattered with marbled patterns resembling dried blood, her sharp teeth biting down on a mask she absentmindedly chewed at, adding an unsettling edge to her poised stance.
