3: Big Deal

Maya's Pov

"I don't know Riley, I'm done dating."
"Come on Maya you can't quit after your first relationship."
"I was so in love with him and then he told me that he never even loved me."
I picked Riley up from school today and told her everything. We were now walking down the hall.
"It's okay to take your time but you can't just give up."
"Please just let me give up this one time."
"Only because I know you hate talking about it."
"Thank you Riles." We continued walking down the hall and then Riley stopped.
"Why don't we ever walk the other way?" She asked.
"Because it takes longer to get to class."
"We could use the exercise."
"Why don't you step over so I can see what you're hiding."
"Maya." She said softly. I gently pushed her over to see what she was hiding. Zach talking to a group of his friends.
"Riley we all go to school together, I was going to have to see him eventually." We walked past him and heard what he was saying.
"You'd think she'd be used to people not loving her and leaving her."
"What did you say?" I turned around to see Farkle and Lucas. This was not going to be good. Lucas walked quickly to where Zach was standing. All of his friends backed away. A hand went on mine and Riley's back. It was Farkle.
"Come on let's go." He said.
"What's he doing?" Riley asked
"I don't know but I don't really want you guys to see." I looked back to see Zach pinned to the lockers.
"If we don't see how do we stop it?" I asked walking back over there.
"Lucas don't! It's not a big deal."
"She even she knows she's not a big deal."
"It's a big deal! You have no right to say that about someone like her! You put her through so much!" Lucas yelled in his face.
"Lucas let's go!" I yelled. He dropped him.
"I'm sorry I did that. I should've stopped when I heard you say my real name."He said to me as we were walking.
"Just promise me not to do it again."
"As long as he can promise to leave you alone."
"I'll be fine." I whispered the last word.
"God I hate that word." He gritted his teeth.

Riley's pov
I hate what Zach did to Maya, and, I hate the feeling I have that this won't be the last time he does something like this.
Maya only told Lucas parts of what happened, but, she told me everything. She came into my room some nights telling me about how drunk Zach got, how he hit her, and the fights they got into. But no matter what Maya always said she loved him.

Lucas' pov
I once heard that people who are single give the best love advice. It never made any sense until now, people who are in love are blind. They're blind to all the flaws their partner has, they're completely blind to the rest of the world because their world is their boyfriend or girlfriend.
Maya's feelings are a big deal. The biggest deal I've ever dealt with. There's something inside me that just wants to make sure that she's the happiest person on the planet.
