The contents of the folder were disturbing. It held photographs of a car accident. The car had been badly crushed straight from the hood to the passengers seat.
___
"You and your parents were in that car. It was snowing, and the road was slippery. The car went out of control and hit a van that headed the opposite direction. Your parents were rushed to the hospital but it was too late, they had lost too much blood. You were the only survivor but you didn't recall anything other than the drive home."
___
I tried to hold back my tears but they still dripped down my face. "This can't be true! They're at home. I-I-"
___
"When was the last time you spoke to them?"
___
"What kind of sick joke is this?"
___
"This is not a joke Ms. Summers. When was the last time you spoke to them?"
___
"I'm not this Jesse Summers that you speak of!! This must be a mistake. My name is Alice Walker."
___
"Your name is Jesse Summers. I'm your psychiatrist. Don't you remember coming here every Thursday? We tried to help you recall these memories and get back your identity. At that time you were taken to a sanctuary but when your condition started to improve, you were released. We just sent Cole to watch over you. He knows your every move. Actually he was the one who noticed your strange behavior, so he brought you here."
___
"Are you telling me that I made my identity up? That I made up the name Alice Walker? I need to talk to someone. I need to call Lucas, he'll explain."
___
"Who's Lucas?"
___
"Lucas Shaw, a guy I met a few years ago."
___
"Jesse, there is no Lucas Shaw. The only Lucas Shaw that I know of is the fictional character from the book The Mind's Eye. That's also where you got the name Alice Walker, from the main character of the story. That was your favorite book. As a matter of fact, you were reading it before the accident. I'm afraid that something like this would happen. The only memory that was left in your mind were the contents of the book. You always talked about it each time we spoke to each other."
___
I couldn't believe the words that I was hearing.
"I just talked to him a few minutes ago. Didn't you see him before you came in? He was also in the van, I'll prove it to you."
___
"I'm afraid you can't do that."
___
I needed to wake up from this nightmare so I ran as fast as I could to the door.
___
"Do you want proof Ms. Summers? There are stitches at the back of your head from the accident."
___
I reached for it and ran my fingers through my head. She was right, I had stitches. I turned around and leaned on the door.
"But he was so real." I said softly as I sat on the floor. The woman walked towards me and sat on the floor as well.
"He was part of your subconscious that wanted to protect you, so he hid the frightening past from you but left you forgetting who you really are. I know this is hard for you to accept but we're doing this for your own good. We need to take you back to the sanctuary, you'll be much safer there. We'll take care of you." She said as she gently put her hand on my shoulders.
"Everything is gonna be fine."
