Act 1

Scene 1: Sophia Finds a Place to Stay

SOPHIA: (Running down a long street while faint voices say things in the distance. SOPHIA is paranoid until she finds a house and is visibly relieved. She goes up to the door and knocks on it.)

MATT: (Politely.) Can I help you?

SOPHIA: (Paranoid and shaking hands.) Can I come inside? I'm in extreme trouble.

MATT: What happened to you? You have blood running down your legs. (Examining her body.)

SOPHIA: (Voice almost to a beg.) I'm seventeen years old. I just need to hide.

MATT: (Demanding.) Come in. (Pulling the door open.)

MATT: (Smiling.) I'm Matt by the way. (Guiding SOPHIA by holding her hand into the living room.)

(SOPHIA and MATT both sit on a leather couch. They stare at each other for a short amount of time.)

SOPHIA: (Sighs and puts hands on legs.)

MATT: What exactly happened? (Sitting back.)

SOPHIA: (Hesitate before speaking.) Well, it's very personal and although you deserve to know because I'm in your house right now, I can't. Summary is that I was being chased by people that were trying very hard to harm me.

MATT: (Nodding.) Do you know these people?

SOPHIA: (Mumbling.) Some.

(MATT nods while SOPHIA looks around the room.)

SOPHIA: Where are your parents? (Observing the empty house.)

MATT: Business dinner. I don't know if they will be home tonight. (Laughs and ends with a fake smile on his face.)

SOPHIA: Is it always like this? (Asks sympathetically as SOPHIA looks into MATT'S eyes.)

MATT: You get used to the loneliness. Some days it's comforting, others it's frightening.

SOPHIA: How's it frightening?

MATT: Because when you're alone your thoughts are loud and alive.

MATT: (Cont.) Do you have anywhere else to go?

SOPHIA: (Shakes head back and forth.)

(MATT opens his mouth to speak, but the front door slams open interrupting him. An OLD LADY wearing a dress and an OLD MAN wearing a black suit walk in with a smile on both of their faces.)

OLD LADY: Who is this? (Walking into the room.)

MATT: Hi, mom. This is my friend, Sophia. (Jumping off the couch.)

(SOPHIA jumps off the couch, follows MATT, smiles, and shakes the OLD LADY and OLD MAN'S hands.)

MATT: (Cont.) She doesn't have a place to stay. Her parents kicked her out. Can she stay here?

OLD MAN: Why did your parents kick you out?

(SOPHIA opens her mouth to talk, but MATT cuts her off.)

MATT: That's a little personal, dad. She had a rough night. Can she please?

OLD LADY: Fine. She can stay in the guest house.

SOPHIA: (Smiling.) Thank you.

(OLD LADY nods, and the OLD LADY and OLD MAN exit the room. MATT stares at SOPHIA.)

SOPHIA: Guest house? (Laughing.)

MATT: (Smiling.) Come with me.
