Scene 4: Breakfast and Ex Boyfriends

(SOPHIA is sitting on a stool in the kitchen while MATT is standing by the stove.)

MATT: I'll cook some eggs. Sounds good?

(SOPHIA nods her head and smiles.)

SOPHIA: It's so quiet here. There is absolutely nothing going on. I'm not used to it. (Laughing.)

MATT: Well, get used to it. (Smiling.) I talked to my parents, and they said you can stay here as long as you need.

SOPHIA: Thank you, Matt.

MATT: No problem. (Smiling.) I'm going to go upstairs and get you some of my clothes to change into. Yours are full of dirt and unwanted memories. Just watch the eggs for me, sweetheart.

(MATT exits stage right. Then, MATT'S phone rings. SOPHIA walks over to the phone to check it.)

SOPHIA: (Whispering.) MATT'S in love with me?

(SOPHIA hears the sound of MATT'S footsteps coming down the stairs, so she rushes back to her stool.)

MATT: (Enters stage right and puts the folded clothes of the counter.) Here you go.

SOPHIA: Can we talk, Matt?

MATT: Hold that thought. (Walking off stage left.)

(SOPHIA looks over to MATT'S phone. She walks over to his phone and unlocks it. Sophia reads text messages on MATT'S phone. MATT enters stage left, and walks up behind Sophia.)

MATT: What are you doing?

(SOPHIA turns around.)

SOPHIA: So you're in love with me? (Crossing arms.)

(MATT looks down at his feet visibly embarrassed.)

SOPHIA: Don't be.

MATT: (Moving closer.) Why can't I? (Touching SOPHIA'S hands.)

SOPHIA: (Mumbling.) Because I'm trouble.

MATT: You're beautiful.

(NATE enters stage left.)

NATE: What's going on?

SOPHIA: Nate, how did you find me?

NATE: I have my ways. You must be Matt, huh? (NATE starts to walk toward MATT visibly very angry.)

(SOPHIA holds back NATE by putting her hands on his chest.)

MATT: You can't be here. This is my house.

NATE: Oh, I can be here. Don't try and be tough. You're embarrassing yourself.

SOPHIA: (Demanding.) Nate, stop being so rude.

NATE: He was touching you, and I'm the only one allowed to touch you.

MATT: (Blurting out.) Obsessed.

NATE: (Losing his smile.) Yes, I am obsessed with her. She's everything to me. I don't care who you are, how much money you have, or anything else. I'm not going to stop loving her, and you aren't going to stop me.

(SOPHIA pulls NATE to the side of the kitchen.)

SOPHIA: What was that Nate? He didn't do anything wrong. I told you to stay away from me. (SOPHIA takes one step back.)

NATE: (Smiling.) It's pretty impossible to stay away from you.

(NATE inches closer to SOPHIA.)

NATE: I know you want a simple life, and I wish I could provide you with that. Maybe one day I can. I know for a fact that he can provide you with everything you ever dreamt of. He has the  money. He has the peace. I have the money, but I have the chaos. But at the end of the day, if I'm coming home to you, I will go through all the chaos in the world. We are complicated. We've gotten through the roughest times in our lives. Let's not make losing each other one of those times.

(SOPHIA and MATT stare at each other.)

NATE: I'm going to go talk to MATT.

SOPHIA: Don't be rude.

NATE: Don't worry.

(NATE kisses SOPHIA'S forehead. Then, SOPHIA exits stage right, and NATE walks over to MATT.)

NATE: I'm sorry for being so rude before. I want her to love me, but I'm a different person now. I'm guessing you know that me and Sophia's families are in the mafia. After one specific event, she never loved me like she did before. Not as much as she did.

MATT: What happened?

NATE: One night me and her were out. It was late at night, early morning. The only light was the street lights running down the road. She was holding my arm, by my side. Then a shadow came out of nowhere. It was a tall man. He grabbed me, shoving me to the floor. I dropped to the floor and looked up. He had Sophia in his arms, trying to rob her or kidnap her. But without hesitation or thought, I reached my hand in my pocket, and took out a gun. I pulled the trigger, and he instantly fell to the ground. She never looked at me the same.

MATT: (Mumbling.) Wow

NATE: So, where I'm going with this is she needs to stay here with you. It's hard not to fall for her, and maybe you're good for her. Maybe I need to let go and let her be happy. If she falls in love with you, you're a lucky guy. Maybe she won't, but that's okay too. She might not be in love with me anymore, but loving a girl like her is a blessing. She's a tough beauty who has been through hell. Please, keep her safe.

MATT: I will.

NATE: I will stop by now and then to check on her. When I know she's fully safe, I'll let you know. Thanks buddy.

(NATE exits stage left.)
