An Airan's Quest

Chapter 1: The Mission

Evanity's POV

I stared at my father's glass window watching snow repeatedly pelting through the window indicating the start of a blizzard. Through the fog and snow forming on the window I could still make out the raging battle between the Airans and the Cabrians unfolding in front of me. Scenes of bloodshed, war, and violence going on endlessly for days now.

The Cabrians were vile creatures who always attempted to steal people's milaires for their creator, Altherea so that she could be more powerful than she already is. It was the first time that they had invaded the Kingdom of Airy and the Airans were hardly prepared for their assault and were getting overwhelmed at the moment without any other reinforcements or help from the other nearby kingdoms.

"Vann?" My father, Ravier, croaked softly at his bed. He was the supreme commander at Airy and when the battalion of Cabrians attacked the kingdom, one of them stabbed him on his chest. Right now I could see that Father was about to pass away even with all the healers and expensive treatments around him.

"Yes, Father?" I slowly approached my father's bedside, sat on the edge of the bed and stared anxiously into his ocean blue eyes, noticing his sunken cheeks and his pale, tired face that reminded me once again of how old he was.

"I have something to give you," he said and took my hands and placed something inside it which I couldn't see. "Come on, you can open your hands, Darling."

I held my breath and opened my hands to reveal my father's milaire: a silver bracelet studded with crystals which sparkled brightly in the dim light of my father's room. "Oh, Father....." My eyes started to well up with tears.

"Now, now," Ravier gently brushed my tears away with his thumb. "Don't cry now, Darling. I'm going to give you this because this bracelet holds the key to your identity. You do remember what I said before right?"

"Yes," I answered simply knowing what he was talking about. Ever since I was a child he kept telling me about that. "That I am the Daughter of Airan."

"That's right," He replied his own eyes glistening with unshed tears as he stared back at me, his beloved daughter. "No matter what happens, dear child, do not forget that."

I nodded solemnly.

Father cleared his throat then said, "Now, you do know that our leader, Learnah Twyla was also wounded from the battle yesterday right?"

When I nodded again he went on, "Well I want you to go on a mission and find the Lord of Thunder and his Lady and inform them personally that the Cabrians are already attacking the kingdom of Airy and that eventually they would also attack the other kingdoms as well."

"But - how can I do that?" I cried out in disbelief. "Father, I'm not the right person for that task. As much as I want to do it, I don't think I can. You know that I haven't advanced yet and that my seclaire still hasn't shown up."

Ravier heaved a shaky breath filled with extreme fatigue. "Vann, you may not know it yet but you have a greater role to play in this mission than the others. Your journey to Enara will indeed be difficult and you will encounter a lot of obstacles hindering you from succeeding in your goal but nevertheless I know that you can do it."

"I don't know why you have so much faith in me, Father," I replied as tears began flowing freely down my cheeks. "I've failed you so many times already." My mind recalled the past events that happened that led the other Airans into doubting whether I really was the daughter of their supreme commander.

"My dear child," He said smiling faintly at me. "Real failure happens when you start to give up. But as I look at you now, all I can see is a young lady who is destined to make a difference in our world."

I smiled back at him looking relieved because he forgave and accepted me despite everything that I had done to fail him. "You can count on me to make you proud, Father." And I embraced him tightly.
