JESSICA's POV:
"You guys look like you've seen a ghost!" biglang sinabi ni Ysabel kaya mas lalo kaming nag-panic. As in 'kami', kasi alam kong nag-panic din si Allyssa. Pero itong lalaking kasama namin, pilit pa ring kinokontrol ang poker face niya.
"What's going on?" nagtatakang tanong ni Ysabel
I opened my mouth to answer, but the truth felt too dangerous to say out loud.
So no one dared to speak.
Because if Ysabel found out where that key card really came from, everything her parents tried to bury might finally come back to the surface.
For a few seconds, it felt like time stopped. I could feel how hard it was for the three of us, me, Allyssa, and Joseph, to control our expressions, as if one wrong move would expose everything.
I forced my face to stay calm even though my heart was pounding. 'Just act normal,' I kept telling myself. But from the corner of my eye, I saw Allyssa, forcing a smile while her fingers trembled. While Joseph, on the other hand, suddenly straightened his posture, like he was bracing himself for a question he didn't want to hear.
Ysabel was looking at us one by one, clearly waiting for an answer. I grew more nervous when I realized she wasn't just confused anymore, she was starting to suspect something.
"Guys, why do you all look like that?" she asked, confused, which made me swallow hard.
I knew that whatever I said could be wrong. One wrong word, and everything we had tried so hard to lock away would come undone.
"Key cards get misplaced sometimes" I answered carefully, and I saw Allyssa nod in agreement with my excuse
"Maybe it's old stuff? It just got mixed in?" I added, even though I wasn't convinced by my own explanation
Allyssa and I exchanged a brief glance that lasted only a second, but it was filled with fear and a silent plea.
Meanwhile, Joseph remained quiet, though I saw his jaw tighten, a sign that something was running through his mind.
Ysabel didn't ask another question right away. She simply stared at the key card in her palm, as if it suddenly felt heavier than before.
And that was when I realized that no matter how much we tried to control our expressions, we couldn't stop the truth from slowly surfacing.
"I want to know why my name is imprinted on this key card" sabi ni Ysabel, kalmado ang boses pero ramdam ko ang diin sa bawat salita
Kaya biglang nanikip ang dibdib ko sa kaba.
At bago pa man ako o si Allyssa makapagsalita, biglang nagsalita si Joseph.
"Do you want to go to that place? Just to answer your curiosity?" biglang tanong niya kaya nanlaki ang mga mata ko at agad na napalingon sa kaniya
I know he ran out of options on how to help their leader, his best friend, but I never expected him to do this.
We had just talked about it earlier. He was so insistent, almost desperate, pushing me to tell Ysabel the truth, saying we were running out of time, running out of solutions. I thought it was just pressure talking. I didn't think he would act on it.
I never imagined that this key card would suddenly appear out of nowhere, as if it had been waiting for its cue to reveal itself. The worst part was that it was placed exactly where Ysabel could see it, as if it was meant to be found.
"Really? Do you have time?" Ysabel asked in disbelief, and it was clear that she was excited by what Joseph had said. Then Joseph nodded without hesitation, which only frustrated me even more.
