There were at least six of them flying through the sky as she looked up. What were they? She would ask herself every night when the giant bird things would take off from the horizon line.
All six of them had ginormous black wings, with a wingspan of at least a good fifteen feet. And every night they would fly through the night sky, and even though they were such big birds they would never make a sound. Until they struck.
You could hear a shriek in the distance and then silence, just silence. Elsa knew this part too well. They had taken her mother and father when she was younger.
Though she could never figure out if this shriek was from the predators or their next victim. No one could. No one tried to hunt them down either, wether it was for game or to get their loved ones back, it was useless nothing worked. If someone did manage to hit one the others would come for them, they would take that person too.
No one knew if those people were dead or alive.
"Elsa, get inside! Quick, I can't lose you too!" Her little sister Anna was holding open the door to their cottage. Elsa was almost 20 years old and Anna was 17. Elsa ran inside the warm cottage, before her sister could give her another lecture about the dangers of going outside at night. Anna gave Elsa one of the mugs of hot cocoa she had made earlier and took a sip of her own mug. "What were you doing outside after sundown, Elsa?" Anna asked carefully. This had always been a touchy subject with them since their parents got taken.
"I don't know. You know I want to go out there, it's like there's something out there calling me out further. Like something needs me." She says putting her mug down on the table next to her and sighing. Elsa was positive that something out there was calling her to it, she just had to figure out what it was.
She sighed again before getting up and saying she was going to bed.
As she sat on her bed she thought about what kept calling her. Finally she gave up and started to sketch what she thought the wings of those bird creatures might look like.
Eventually she she fell asleep and dreamed of flying, not like in an airplane but with the wings she drew. She felt free, like there were no worries at all in her life. No bills to pay, no food to buy, and no responsibility. Just free.
