The Guilt Is Slowly Fading

She extended her hands towards me,

"Hi."

I felt myself stare at her hand for a while before taking it and shaking it. Once I touched her hand, We both knew the guilt was fading away in the smallest way possible. We both didn't know how we could live for this long with the deafening silence that was meant to hold us apart from each other. Of course, it was horrible, we hated it so much. But to hear either/or's voice, it was relieving.

"Hey."

She smiled a crooked smile as well, before properly shaking mine, but not letting go.

"Welp, we never talk, how 'bout now?"

I felt myself grow silent for a bit, I couldn't say that wasn't true, because surely indeed it was.

"Umm...so..."

Was all I could make out, I was quiet speechless at the moment. She didn't like the fact I was speechless, but decided to accept why.

"So how's life?"

"It's been good, yours?"

"Good."

...

"That's cool."

"Kayy."

...

Even though the small talk was pretty awkward, we still managed to keep it going without so much hesitation. Our hands were still clutched together. Not much in the loving way, but maybe desperate for taking back the will of our friendship again. I was surely positive Desiree was willing to take it back...I might as well too.

"So...anything new?"

"Uh...lemme think...eh, nothing much, just made a new friend again."

"Cool."

Everything went dead silent...just as I feared, yet, I could not sense any guilt or fear in her face nor eyes. She kept it casual...but not to casual, she stiffened a bit. I could feel her hand giving up and letting mine go. She tugged a bit to make me let go, and I didn't decline, nor did I budge much to have her let go. She pushed her hands back into her pockets of her sweater. Looked at me straight in the eye, not letting her eyes move away from mine. Her lip quivered a bit, but suddenly stopped when she bit the inside of her lip. She kept her body straight, not letting her body move. She let her hair get in her face, not caring if her hair would swing around because of the air conditioner that was above us. Her eyes barely blinked, maybe a few time or so, but rarely. Her feet shuffled around a bit, before finding a comfortable and suitable stance. Her mouth opened a tad bit, she closed it though, but then opened her mouth once again...

"So, are we still friends?"
