The purpose was to save the vampires life. In past vampires used to have lots of wars, in between the fight when the vampire gets exhausted or dying they would suck on slaves blood just to regain their energies or would trade them to save their life.
Slaves can also be used as servants, all they had to do was listen to their master's command. Master can do whatever they want to do to with their slave, they may or may not killed them it's up to them...
