Minutes turned to hours, hours to days, days to weeks. Re-exploring already discovered regions didn't help to cure your boredom, neither the loss of the sense of time. The reason? Finding a way out, a means to run into something from the surface rather than the sheer landscape of the underground. What kept you going neither mattered to you nor did you want to know.

Breathing the same air in the same space over and over again was one of the things you hated, the reason you mostly went to wheatfields — whatever patch of grass, really — to bask in the warm rays of the merciful sun, keeping you from whatever insanity that plagued your mind.

You often asked yourself if it was worth dying for.

Nobody replied.
Nobody knew.
Nobody felt the same way you do.
Nobody never made the effort of trying to understand, so did you, too.

Any moment you strolled around the underground — was it really strolling since you defeated any infected bug who got in your way with relative ease? — you felt as if you were unconscious. Only doing what was necessary — at that moment it was to grind. And that meant killing these infected mobs.

Whenever you set foot in the mazed underground tunnels, you deliberately searched for any possible exits, only to find yourself back at the same place or similar. Was it truly inevitable for you to not find a way out? A part of you believed it.

But at the same time it made you more determined to try.

During the time you've spent up until now, you visited the shopkeepers whenever you could. In exchange for Geo you received a few useful tools such as an old fashioned lantern, the Lumafly Lantern from Sly, or Charms, anything valuable for your journey in the future. Oh, and map accessories from the cartographer's wife. In addition, an eerie, almost disturbing discovery had kept your mind busy ever since.

You no longer felt the human needs, namely thirst and hunger.

You hadn't realized it the first two or three days, but after time passed, that distinctive lack of basic human necessities meant for survival became apparent. It ensured you lived, nourished your body to live healthy - basic survival needs. But now that it disappeared, you began to worry.

Just until you remembered; you were in another body, specifically the Knight's. And according to whatever lore you found about the game, the Knight was destined to become a vessel. For what reason, you didn't know.

You found a bench to rest your legs, pretty convenient, and sat down. Peering at the Charm Collection screen, you equipped the compass Charm, Dashmaster, and Gathering Swarm, switching Heavy Blow out in your Charm inventory.

«Map updated.»

The System's notification interrupted your momentary solitude. Grabbing the map from your inventory and opening it, the difference was immediate. The once plain and basic white sheet of paper gained definition; new routes, new caves, new everything. You stashed it away, deciding to inspect it after your little pause.

After another failed trip around the twists and turns of Hallownest, you returned to Dirtmouth, heading straight to Sly's little shop. From inside, you heard what seemed to be a pencil or pen scratching on paper. Knocking on the door and after receiving a "Come in!" from the shopkeeper, you peered inside before entering, closing the door behind you.

True to your guess, he was writing a letter. It was only when you approached him at the counter did he acknowledge you, setting his quill back into the inkwell. "Hello again, friend!"

You dipped your head in greeting, your eyes falling onto the writing on the paper.

"Who are you writing to?"
