Here are two tips for when cleaning the hamster cage:
Keep your hamster in a safe area.
When cleaning the cage throughly, it's important that your hamster is safe in a place like a travel cage, or OVO type cage. Just put in a toy, food, water, a small bit of bedding, and your hamster!
If you use a ball of some sort, only keep your hamster there for 10-15 minutes. With all that exercise, they'll need food and water a little later.
Keep some bedding for after, too.
After you clean the hamsters cage, add some of the cleaner bedding from before so your hammie can still smell the familiar scent!
