Chapter 8:
It was Rahul, Rohan's friend. I was staring at him and him at me. 'What do I say? Why must he be here? Ohmygod, is he hurt like Rohan too?' I started thinking impossible things until I heard Joy squeak. I looked at Joy and back at Rahul who was busy looking at Joy as if awe struck.
"Umm... hey" I broke the silence. I somehow liked the silence better.
"Hey" he said after snapping back from his trance.
"How can I help you?" I asked him.
"Umm actually" he started but he was still looking at Joy.
"Rahul, that's my son, Joy" I added just to clear his confusion. It was like he hit a jackpot and nodded.
"So..." he started and I cut him off.
"Yes, me and Rohan" I cleared my throat, awkwardly. He nervously took a sip of water from my desk and kept it back. He then carefully extended his arm and showed me a.... cut? Seriously, where exactly do these men get these cuts from?
"Oh that looks bad." I took a closer look and found out that it was same as the one Rohan had when he came home for the last time.
"It might need stitches" I said he nodded. I added "Umm can you lay down there? I'll get to you in sometime?" I asked him and he obeyed like five year old. I went to him with a syringe filled with some local anaesthesia. He looked at it and then to me. He was definitely scared.
"Are you.... afraid?" I asked to which he immediately answered.
"No, no" he said. I understood the hurry of his answer and smiled. I bent down to his ear and "Don't worry, it'll hurt just a little" and pulled back with a smile. I held his arm and injected the anaesthesia as he winced. I waited five long minutes and then stitched his cut up. It wasn't much but it needed attention. After I was done, I saw him wincing in pain so I handed him a painkiller and water. After which, he dozed on the bed for long one hour. When he woke up, I was feeding Joy who was happy as always to drink his 'after-lunch' snack.
"Hey, feel any better?" I asked him. He nodded rubbing his eyes. I placed joy back and sealed the milk bottle.
"For how long did I pass out?" he asked.
"For a good one hour, it's alright. I gave you intense drugs" I explained to which he just nodded. Then I asked him the question that I was willing to ask.
"Rahul?
"Hmm?"
"How exactly umm ... did you get this cut?" I asked waiting for him to answer.
"At the training, we have a lot of training so that we don't mess up" he said and I nodded.
"Anyway, take these tablets for 3 days. Your wound will be healed." I handed him the tablets. He nodded.
"How much should I pay?" he asked.
"Umm no, you have a card don't you? That pays for it" I told him.
"About the... get together? Are you coming?" he asked.
"Oh yes I would love too" I said and continued "I would love to see Rohan being honoured."
"Ya he was a great guy and a very understanding friend" he laughed a pitiful laugh "You know he took care of all of us if anything went wrong? At any point, if anyone required anything, he was there" He said. I knew Rohan was very open minded and helping natured man. I loved him for the very sole reason. Loved? I still do. I smiled to this confession Rahul made.
"Well I guess I should... leave now" he said. I stood up and we shook hands, he left. I went back to Joy, packed him up and left the clinic. My assistant was just leaving and we met at the door. She was one of my close friends now and we talked like sisters.
"I'll see you tomorrow?" I asked her and nodded in agreement and left after hugging me. I drove back home and went to my room. I placed Joy and took out his clothes. He was almost about to sleep. I gave him a quick clean up and put him to sleep after feeding. I then took a shower and was resting on the couch with TV remote in my hand and laptop at one side. After a while, we sat at dinner table, talking the day.
"Ma, today Rahul came to the clinic. He had this cut on his hand" I told ma. Her face lit up as though her lottery ticket won.
"Oh is it? He's such a good boy" she said and smiled. "He and Rohan were so close. Before you got married, we had him over for every little vacation" she mentioned.
"Oh, so why not after we got married?" I asked.
"Well I don't really know. After you got married, he just stopped coming. Not that we didn't invite him. In fact, Isha use to call him over for every Rakshabandhan (a festival/ritual performed by brother and sister, in order to protect the sister). He came over every year, but not after you got married" she said, I just nodded.
It would almost be a year in a week after the incident. It was all the same, I had only lost a person and gained another. Ironic, isn't it? The one who left, left forever and the one who came, will stay almost forever.
