I left to fetch Brittany, feeling sick as I did so. What was Dani doing to me? I wasn’t someone’s puppet. No, I was Nevaeh Shayanne Leigh . . . who had let people walk all over her before she suddenly got confident. Who was also speaking about herself in the third-person. Yeah, that girl was me.

Brittany just sat in her seat, her face glazed over, waiting for me. The sight of her made me cringe.

I may be giving up my personal safety to be friends with her?

I shook my head. There was no need to resort to pitiless words against a girl. After all, that was what happened to me. The last thing I needed was to be called a hypocrite by my friends.

“Everything’s clear. We can go now.” My voice had a certain edge in it. Certainly Brittany wouldn’t notice. She would pass it off as being tired or something else.

“Oh yeah. I’m coming,” she got up out of her seat and headed towards the car. The lot was nearly empty by now, except a few stragglers who were pushed away by the crowd trying to get out as soon as possible. Unlocking the door, she moved her wrist upward and I noticed something on it.

“What’s that?” I asking, going around the car to sit in the front.

                “What’s what?”

“That thing on your wrist. What is it?”

She looked down on her wrist, studied it for a moment, and replied, “It’s just a temporary tattoo I got a few weeks ago. It’s really small because I didn’t want everyone noticing it.”

“What does it say then?” I looked closer to try to make out the tiny writing inside of the picture enveloped by a colorful firework. Squinting, I could make out her name but not much else.

“’Brittany and Dani equals friends for life.’”

My thoughts turned to Dani again. Honestly I didn’t know what to do about her. Her threats were probably empty. Either that, but she maybe wanted to try to beat me up. I could take her any fight.

She dropped me off at my house and I looked after her as she drove away. I felt a little weird going with her to the movies. It felt as if I was cheating on my friends. I dismissed that thought because they knew I was going with her to the movies.

I powered on my Blackberry and it alerted me that I had five new texts, all from Lexie.

After the movies, wanna come with me to the mall with Aubrey and me?
