I try to love you how you ask,
I try to leave so you remain,
I try to break my own saved self,
Yet you can't look at me again.
I try to give you what you want,
I try to leave you what you need,
I try to be your own savant,
Yet knowing you means forgetting me.
You only want me when I'm gone,
You only ask for my back turned,
You look at me with eyes that fawn,
Yet push me back away left spurned.
I cannot give you less than this,
I cannot reserve one speck more,
I cannot love you such preserved,
Thus I must love you nevermore.
But loving you is what I am,
My essence borne from very Truth,
Forgive me please, My Promised Land,
That I should settle on this hill,
That I should leave your grace to else,
That I should leave you to your will.
I must love you, such is my curse,
But loving you I'll do afar,
I'll die beholding less than I can offer,
Your name on my lips ever tart.
