As we walked along the trail, heading to what used to be a town for some extra food, I could hear Jace and Riley talking to each other quietly behind me and, even though they where whispering, it sounded like a giant was stomping around as if to aggrevate me. Finally I said "Guys. Seriously, you've been talking for, like, an hour." Immediately Riley went on the defensive.
"Talking? You call that talking? That's all you've done for three days, even of we just say a few sentences."
Then, surprisingly, Jace came to my aid.
"Sweets. Calm. What can you expect? She's been out here alone for almost a year."
"So?"
"With no one to talk to."
"Oh. Yeah ok I'll try and be quieter."
I nodded my thanks and continued walking. Now that I think about it I wish I'd let them keep talking, but then I wouldn't have a story to tell would I?
The few yards we walked in silence were soon forgotten as we heard a high pitched wailing sound coming from ahead on us on the trail. I motioned for the others to stop before knocking an arrow and sliding off the trail and up a few meters into the brush. After motioning for Jace and Riley to stay there I went on ahead, ready to fight off whatever it was. As I got closer I realized the screams were somewhat human. I quickened my pace until I came to the edge of the clearing that the sounds seemed to be coming from. I hid quietly behind a tree waiting quietly. Finally gathering my bravado I peeked around my tree. What I saw filled me with horror. On the ground were the broken and torn bodies of what had one been a large travel group. In the center of the mess was three Psycotics, the worst stage of the Crazed, ripping apart this women while in their human form. If you can't picture it imagine this. Three human looking things with bright electric blue eyes covered in blood crouched around a human who'd had her stomach ripped open and was presently being served as a raw lunch, that would be somewhat close to what lay before me. Now, with a gathering sense of terror I realized that she was not lunch, but the last part of desert. The rest of the broken once-human bodies had suffered the same fate, and I knew from personal experience that even though they looked dead these people around her would rise in about 10 minutes into a full fledged Crazed. Somehow I had to get me, Jace and Riley around these creatures without dying.... not exactly the easiest thing to do.
I gathered my things and went back to Jace and Riley. Upon giving the report I saw the most disgusted and hopeless faces than in four years.
"It's OK guys. I know we'll find another way through." That was it. My lame attempt at a pep speech, and it obviously wasn't working. I glanced around, then back behind me. Taking a deep breath and rearranging how I held my bow. Looking back to Jace and Riley I raised my eyebrows. Riley was angry, that much was obvious, but Jace was concentrating. And from the look of it he seems much better at it than I am.
"Jace, you got any bright ideas you want to share?"
"Not exactly" Hesitant, worried
Riley turned and looked to Jace. "Come on! Tell us!"
"Well....."
"Spit it out already!" Me, irritated.
"We could, well, use a distraction."
"Oh. And who do you suppose is gonna be the bait?!?" As if to exclamate my point another strangled scream works its way from the clearing followed by a loud raspy breath.
As I'm sitting there I'm ready to tell him to walk over there himself he raises his downcast eyes and, you wanna guess who he looks at? Be my guest, but just in case you get it wrong I'll tell you. Those idiotic, stupid, crazy blue eyes look at me.
I took a deep breath, preparing myself to jump up and shoot. And I'm betting you can tell who lost the argument and who couldn't think of another solution. Me, of course. So now I'm sitting over here, presently the farthest spot from the Psychos, ready to volunteer myself as a meal. Not exactly how I planned my day.
As I stood a million thoughts raced through my head. I pushed them all to the back and fired an arrow at the closest Psycho. It screamed inhumanly as my arrow slammed into it, this alerted the other two and they all stand walking towards me as I see a flash of Riley's hair as they shoot behind the angered Psychos to "safety"'. I look behind me and step backwards before firing another arrow at the wounded Psycho, hitting him in the eye and rewarding me with another shriek of pain as it withered away. I reached back and reloaded my bow as the other two started jogging. I fired. Once. Twice. Then I turned and ran as hard as I could, knowing it wasn't fast enough to keep a healthy distance from the last Psycho who had decided I was to die. And hoping that Jace would keep his promise...... "God I hope they didn't just skip town." I whisper breathlessly as I hear the crashing of a VERY angry Hunter behind me, intent on catching it's prey, no intent on catching me.....
