Chapter 8 : Now what? - Callum's POV
The three cars pulled into to the garage of the moderately sized police station. All of us trooped out and we headed to the police station, which was quite a small affair with only one room and a tiny, cramped lockup which was empty.
Crime rates in this area were historically low and I'm sure the police didn't really do any work most of the time. As it is, when we entered the police station, there was only a single police station, who had such a bored expression when we entered, that I was already feeling sympthatetic to him.
I could barely imagine sitting in such a tiny room for days on end with nothing to do even when your job is a police job. Well I believe that policemen have some of the most interesting and thrilling jobs in the world.
The policeman seemed to perk up a bit when we entered the room. We must be the first complainants in the day, or perhaps in the week. He straightened and he fished out a notebook and a pen out of his drawer, which seemed to be overflowing with contents.
The name plate on his uniform said that he was only a constable. Obviously for a job as serious as this one, we couldn't do with only a constable. We needed to get higher autorities involved into this matter as soon as possible.
So our job was cut out - we needed to convince the constable that he needed to contact the police high command in Furnost and request them to send a few high-level officers immediately. Not exactly a very easy job, I must say for I have no idea why he would believe a group of young "children" like us.
We had already discussed who was going to do the talking in the police station on the way here. Kyle had been assigned that job and if he failed the back-up option was Angie. I'm sure he would listen to a girl like Angie, if he didn't listen to the rest of us. She seemed to be having a way of making men listen to her.
The constable was a huge figure, not exactly fat but bulky due to his muscles. He had a extremely thick jet black moustache and was quite young, He was quite tall, he would easily be a few inches taller than Jason, who was the tallest among us all.
He smiled at us when we came in and asked us politely whether we needed to make a complain against someone. Well, if only he knew what we wanted to omplain about.
Kyle took a step ahead of the rest of us and introduced himself to the constable, who was very much alert now. He started his speech with a brief introduction of all of us and our school teachers. He spoke about all that we had seen in the past few days, right from the beach incident, where we met Percy for the first time.
He took a small breath when he reached the part where Connor was entering the neighbouring villa for this was the most interesting and exciting part of the story. I could make out that the constable was slightly excited now.
The policeman must have thought this complaint was regarding a theft or something like that. So I wasn't exactly surprised when he was quite amazed at what Kyle was saying - about our teachers being terroists and their group attacking Furnost and other major cities of the country.
Kyle spoke most eloquently and convincingly and I was most sure that police would believe us. He ended his tale quickly and then looked at the constable most beseechingly. The constabe stared at him for a moment as if he didn't expect Kyle to complete his story so fast.
He said then,"Well I must say that your courage is most praiseworthy. Not many can claim to do half of as much as what you have done. Coming to the police station and feeding me such fanciful cock-and-bull stories. I grant you this, the young man out here is a most convingcing and fiery orator. You know, for a moment you guys almost fooled me, I was atually believing your story." He laughed for a few seconds, a mocking laughter which made me feel like slapping him and continued, "Well I really enjoyed the stoy but so if you do have some more to share with me do not hesitate to pay me a visit again. I get really bored sometimes out here. Ha, like terrorists would set up a base in this sleepy little town. And like terrorists are actually school teachers."
The constable had dashed my hopes. Judging from his appearance, I had been under the impression that he would believe us. Well, I remembered the famous old proverb now, "Do not judge a book by it's cover."
Since our Plan A had backfired horribly, we switched to Plan B. Angie stepped forward and took Kyle's place. She looked at the constable with wide and pleading large eyes. She said then in a extremely urgent and desparate tone,"Sir please, we speak the truth. Whatever Kyle just said is actually what has happened in the past few days. Even we find it most difficult to comprehend but we say so because we actuallyt have seen all this happening."
The constable's only reaction was to guffaw and wave his hand as if he was brushing aside the topic."You people think you'll can make me believe this nonsense? I'm not fool to buy all this rubbish. Listen, I'm getting tired of this now. I've got more important work to do now than listen to a bunch of fantastical stories made up by you guys."
Well, I'm sure the last sentence was a lie. He didn't have any work on his hands. Above all, what infuriated me was the fact that he refused to even acknowledge us as anyone important. He behaved with a sense of superiority, like we all were a group of young innocent and foolish children and he was some genius intellectual. I couldn't stand this attitude on anyone.
Infuriated, I stormed out of the police station. Well id this guy refused to believe us or take on action on this matter, I would take it into my own hands. I didn't need any help from idiots like him. Behind me came most of the others, save for two or three who yet tried to reason with the stubborn policeman.
They didn't stay long though, and we all were outside within a couple of minutes. The guys who had been inside till the end said that he had agreed to believe us if we gave him some solid evidence of our allegations.
"That guys is such a jerk. I hate him." Katie said scowling.
She seemed to be echoing all our views for no one disagreed with her. That guys attitude to us had been so conscending that we all were mighty pissed.
"Let's go back now, we have no work here. I told you girls before, there is not chance of him believing us." Jason said triumphantly.
"Oh shut up, you're such a pessismist. There was no harm in trying. Anyways, as you said we can go back now, our work here is done. We can discuss what needs to be done later." Ruby said and headed towards the nearest car.
We all to dispersed to random cars and proceeded to the Villa. Another Meeting was in the offing soon.
