Gin POV
The television in the corner of the café played quietly while several men in dark suits sat scattered around the room.
Most customers paid no attention to the afternoon news report covering Saguru Hakuba's latest case. The screen showed reporters crowding the gates of Ekoda High and students moved through the background. One girl briefly turned at the edge of the frame, only visible for a second. Despite her shorter hair and glasses her features seemed familiar.
My eyes narrowed slightly as the image disappeared from the screen "...Run that footage back"
"Yes aniki..." Vodka replied.

(a few days later)
Kaiya POV
Our PE class gathered on the gym floor and I adjusted my ponytail absently while students split into teams. It was then I noticed the coach standing near the equipment cart wasn't our usual instructor. Something felt wrong....he seemed to be watching too carefully. My stomach tightened slightly.
"Hey Saguru, do you know what happened to Sensei?" I asked.
"Sensei called in sick today" Saguru explained.
I kept my expression neutral. Don't stare at the coach. Don't react.
The substitute coach blew the whistle sharply "You may call me Coach Kaneda I'll be supervising for now. We'll be playing volleyball"
As teams spread out across the court, I could feel his eyes tracking me.
The first serve came hard across the net. I stepped toward it automatically to recieve it, but stopped myself.
"Ow-!" I grimaced as the ball slammed directly into my shoulder
Several classmates winced sympathetically.
"Kana, are you okay?!" Aoko called.
I rubbed my shoulder awkwardly and forced a sheepish laugh "Guess I'm terrible at volleyball."
Kaneda watched silently from across the court.
The next few rounds I deliberately hesitated and allowed myself to miss catches and react late.
******************
By lunchtime, the tension in my shoulders still hadn't faded. Maybe I was overthinking it, maybe he really was just a substitute teacher.
The cafeteria line shuffled forward slowly and Aoko continued enthusiastically debating lunch choices with Kaito while Saguru stood quietly beside me.
"I wonder which soup to choose today" Aoko chattered.
"It's all the same anyway" Kaito replied.
"It is NOT all the same!" Aoko argued back.
Then a movement caught my eye. A student nearby slipped suddenly and the tray he was carrying tilted violently sideways.
"Watch out!" I shouted as the bowl of hot soup tipped towards Saguru. My body moved before my mind could stop it. I caught the tray cleanly with one hand while my other arm steadied the falling student by the shoulder. Not a single drop spilled.
The cafeteria fell oddly quiet for half a second and the student blinked in shock "T-Thank you!"
I slowly handed the tray back "...Careful," I said quietly.
Then I looked up to see Kaneda standing near the cafeteria entrance watching. His expression hadn't changed but I knew he had saw everything.
Beside me, Saguru's eyes narrowed slightly.
