It had been only a few minutes since Lily had sat down to watch James sleep when she began drifting off herself. The dim lights mixed with the sultry scent of parchment and musty books just lulled her right to dream land.
Her dream started at the Quidditch pitch. James was flying around the field on his broom absently throwing the Quaffle and zooming off to catch it before it hit the ground. Whoops and hollers sounded from the stands but James ignored them, his concentration not on the game, nor the spectators. One lone figure marched to the center of the field, her dark red hair blowing madly in the wind."James Potter! You get down here right this instant!" Lily shouted; her hands on her hips, her foot tapping. James' head jerked in her direction and he let the quaffle fall to the ground as if he hadn't even known it was there. He landed gently and looked at Lily, his expression still solemn. He didn't say anything, but met her gaze and measured the distance between them.
"What's all this non-sense that has been spread around the castle about Severus? What did he ever do to you?" James furrows his brow and canted his head to the side.
"What's this? What have I done to upset you now?" He folded his arms across his chest and stuck his left foot out, his broom hovering in the air next to him.
"You know very well what Potter. What is this absurd nickname you are calling Severus? Snivellus?" She spat out the word in disgust. "Just because you are a bit popular doesn't mean you can take us outcasts and torture us until we beg for mercy."
"He had it coming to him." James said bitterly and turned his head away his gaze on the three goal posts at the other end of the Quidditch pitch. Lily puffed out a gasp and stomped her foot.
"What did he DO?" James gave Lily a look, his mouth open, but no words came out.
Lily waited for an answer that never came and the dream shifted.
The Quidditch pitch was replaced with the potions classroom. A tall man in a long billowy black cloak paced the room, his hands behind his back a dark curtain of hair fell to the sides of his face. All around the room students were working on their potions glancing wearily at the man at the front of the room. The man moved to the back of the class, said a few snarls to the student and made the potion in his cauldron disappear.
"Ten points from Hufflepuff." His voice echoed around the room, the students all flinching at his harsh tone.
"Professor Snape." A small voice called from the back of the room. A girl dressed in the robes belonging to Ravenclaw gestured towards her cauldron. "Can you take a look at this for me and tell me what I have been doing wrong." Snape looked at the little girl; she was about the only one in the classroom who ever dared speak to him. He glancing in her cauldron and plucked a bottle from her potion kit.
"It's quite obvious that you need to add boomslang skin as it says here." He thrust his finger at the book propped up in front of the girl. "Don't any of you read the directions?" he spun around and called the class to attention. "Class is dismissed for today, put your potions in a flask and label them with your name before putting them on my desk. Don't break anything" The class moved as fast as they could and filed out of the room, the form of Professor Snape disappearing all together.
The dream ended and Lily woke, her eyes catching sight of James across from her. Disoriented she looked around the room and then back at James.
"How long have I been asleep?"
"About an hour, what did you dream about? It didn't look pleasant by the look you had on your face." James reached across the table and put his hand atop hers. Lily shook her head and rubber her eyes.
"You can tell me. I won't make fun of you." Lily looked up at him and sighed before recounting the things she had seen and heard in her dream.
