A week passed; than two. Lily and James had yet to meet other than in the common room after dinner and even then they weren’t ever really together. James always with his three friends in the armchairs by the fire and Lily was with her friends in a quiet corner by a window. It didn’t matter how many times their eyes had met, or a smile was flashed in her direction, Lily was longing for his company more than ever.
She had met with Severus every day for the last two weekends to try and reconcile their friendship. Although, she wasn’t really meeting with him, it was more like pestering him to tell her what had gotten his wand in a knot. He brushed her off just as she had for the last few years and only listened when she plead nicely and offered him something in return. So he let her hang around him, but he didn’t tell her anything, neither did she.
By the last day of the first weekend he had let a few things lose and she was having a bit of an understanding of the things he was dealing with. It almost seemed like it did when they were little, sneaking out of the house in the summer to have their secret meetings in the park, doing a little magic, not a care in the world; but it was different. Severus was cold, and crude, his mannerisms turning discourteous, his snide remarks hurting her more than before.
The end of the second weekend came fast and Lily came to the realization that she didn’t need Severus in her life to make her happy. If he was going to continually brush her off and treat her with disdain, she would take James over him any day.
That Sunday night Lily was walking up from dinner after a particularly long day with Severus, her mind wandering aimlessly, no set thought on her mind, her feet taking her automatically to the library. She stopped at the door, realizing where she was and looked around.
The library was pitch-black, not a soul was around; not even the small pointy-faced librarian was behind her desk, the normal books that were stacked high were no-where to be found and a soft glow came from a table in the middle of the large room.
She walked closer, her eyes squinting in the darkness of the room, trying to see what it was. Just above the table a white orb of light floated, with no distinguishable shape. Almost immediately Lily felt that weight that had held down her heart lighten as she came up to the table. She sat at the bench, realizing that this was their table and watched the orb until it dimmed to nothing.
The room was instantly dark, dark enough that Lily could scarcely see her hand in front of her face. It wasn’t too long after the light was gone that the candles and torches along the walls lit up and revealed a figure sitting on the bench across from her.
Her breath caught in her throat and her heart skipped a beat as she glimpsed the familiar messy black hair and glasses of James Potter. As the lights got brighter so did the smile that was on his face, he stood, his eyes never leaving hers and walked around the table before taking her hands in his and pulling her to her feet. They stood there, staring into each other’s eyes for what felt like minutes before James spoke,
“Now, how about that date you promised me?”
