The next few days flew by fast and James and Lily hadn’t had much time for each other. Between rounds with Remus, studying for N.E.W.T.S.’s, homework and Quidditch practice Lily hadn’t had any time to spend with James. Sure they would see each other at meals but James was so busy with his friends that Lily could hardly get a word in edgewise. James had snuck apologetic glances in her direction and she always just shrugged her shoulders, ready to wait for the next possible opportunity to talk to him.
Now she sat in Charms; her normally favorite class; and wished she was anywhere else. She put her elbows on the table in front of her, her quill between her hands, the ink dripping onto her blank roll of parchment.
She looked over her shoulder, catching a glimpse of James. He sat a few desks behind her, Sirius next to him, the other two on his other side. He had his head on his fist, eyes closed, glasses askew; he had fallen asleep five minutes after class started, he had practice until late last night and practice early that morning. The upcoming match was two days away and the team wanted to get in as many practices as they could.
She looked to the front of the class and was startled to find that the lesson was being closed up and everyone was packing up their parchment and quills. She looked down at her empty scroll and sighed as she rolled it up and stuck it in her bag; she twirled the cap onto her ink bottle and stuffed it in an outside pocket with her quill before standing up with the rest of the class and filing out of the room.
“Hey Lily!” She turned and saw Remus coming towards her; he tossed his bag toward Peter and took Lily’s bag from her before giving it to Peter.
“Remus.”
“I am taking James’ place once again. Shall we head off?” Lily smiled at him and nodded, her eyes trained on James as he took her bag from Peter. He gave her a small smile and sleepily shrugged his shoulders before following Sirius and Peter off to the common room for their break period, no doubt off to the Quidditch pitch.
She turned back to Remus and tried to hide disappointment in her tone.
“Let’s get going. I’m sure there are Slytherin’s somewhere making a scene.” She rolled the sleeves of her blouse up to her elbows as they started down the hallway.
A small chuckle came from Remus, “You don’t have to act Lily. I know you well enough at this point that you want more time with James.” Lily pursed her lips and frowned.
“Is it that obvious?” He shook his head, falling in step next to her.
“No, but I have gotten to know you very well over the last few years, I can read you like a book.” Lily shook her head, a small smile playing on her lip.
“I guess you do know me that well.” She mused to herself for a few moments as they turned a corner. “Well, two can play at that game;” She gave him a wicked smile and folded her arms over her chest. “You have that secret you’re not supposed to tell me about.” Remus turned his head to look out one of the passing windows, his eyes trained on the sky.
“Yes, well no one knows about that secret.”
“Except for James, Sirius and Peter.” Lily stated her eyes on his face.
“They are my,”
“Best friends I know.” She finished
“Yes, and they,”
“Like to support you.” She finished once again.
Remus laughed, “I guess you do know me well Lily. I’m surprised.” He ran a hand over his jaw, and then smiled.
“What’s to be surprised about?” She shrugged, “The year is almost over. We’ve got N.E.W.T.S. in a month then after that we are to be thrust into the Wizarding World. All last year’s prefect duties, tack on half of James’ Head Boy duties and there you have it: Plenty of time for me to get to know you. I’d say I know you almost as well as you know me.
Remus mused over that for a few moments, his gaze out the windows again.
“You’re right Lily, I shouldn’t have been surprised. I wouldn’t be half surprised if you even knew what my secret was. I’ve probably let something slip once or twice.” He looked at Lily then stopped. “Wait. Don’t tell me you do know?” Lily smiled at him.
“I have quite a guess, but I am fairly certain I might be right.” Remus nodded.
“Have at it, try and guess my secret. You can ask me any question, that is, if you need to.”
“Oh, I don’t think I do.” Remus made a sweeping gesture with his hand and folded his arms over his chest. Lily looked up at him skeptically.
“Well, with a few of the things you’ve hinted at, and that lesson in Defense Against the Dark Arts a few years back, the days you are absent, and those beautiful markings on your face; I’d have to take a not so wild guess and say that you are a Werewolf.” Remus laughed and put his head in his hands.
“I knew you were a smart one Lily. You don’t hate me for this?” Lily shook her head.
“Not as much as I am for you not telling me until now. Come on Remus, you waited until now? How long have they known?”
“Oh I don’t know, since we became friends.” They laughed together and continued down the corridor to finish up their rounds.
