The Boggart, in the form of a Dementor crept towards Lily but was pushed back when a whisp of white light spread from her wand and shielded her from the cold, decrepit creature. Remus gave a huge smile and nodded at Lily. The boggart, swept back into the wardrobe and the door shut behind it, Remus locking it with a wave of his wand.
“You did better than those other three.” Remus whispered to her as the three boys clapped their hands from their places on their chairs, James’ eye glinting in her direction.
“Would you like to try something else?” Remus asked and swept a hand towards the other objects in the room.
“What other sort of stuff do you do?” She asked a little hesitantly. “I’m a bit tired out from that Dementor actually. That’s the first time I have seen one.”
“Yes, but that wasn’t a Dementor Lily, that was a Boggart. Dementors are much worse.” Lily’s face paled and she sunk into the chair next to James. He took her free hand and winked at her.
“Let her rest for a bit. We can show her something else.” He smiled and gave the boys a look.
“You’re not talking about?” Peter asked.
“Blimey-” Sirius sank deeper into his chair.
“He is.”
“We said we would never show it to anyone.”
“Now he’ll be wanting to show her is Anima- never mind.” Lily looked from Sirius then James confused at their exchange.
“What are you to show me?” She asked her eyes narrowing. James stuck his hand in his pocket and pulled out a thick wad of parchment. He placed it in front of Lily and gestured for her to open it.
Gingerly she took it in her hands and opened the front flap.
“There’s nothing on it.”
“Well of course there isn’t you’ve got to use a spell.” Peter said on the other side of the circle.
“What is the spell?” Lily looked up at Remus, who she thought would give her the answer but was surprised when he said,
“Try a spell you think would work.” He grinned a grin Lily had never seen on his face before then she turned to look at James, now worried. He nodded and she took a deep breath before muttering a spell under her breath.
At first nothing happened then slowly ink spread on the front cover of the page and words appeared.
“Messer’s Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs gladly welcome Ms. Evans and congratulate her for having the prettiest hair around. We also would like to note that she is a brilliant witch and could do better when it came to men. I’m sure Mr. Snape wouldn’t mind your company now and again, although I’m sure there would be someone who would mind. Don’t mind us, we’re just words that are meant to insult you, we don’t mean anything.”
“You’ve ruined it James! Why’d you have it say that?” Sirius asked after reading over Lily’s shoulders, the ink disappearing.
“Me? I don’t control what it says!” James replied.
“I don’t know about you, but that is exactly what I would have said!”
“This is the first time it’s done it, I’m sure it doesn’t know what it is supposed to say exactly yet.”
“It’s just because it’s Lily!”
“Erm, what is this supposed to be?” James and Sirius looked at Lily, then at the parchment in her hands.
“Right, sorry Lily. The words are ‘I solemnly swear I am up to no good’” He taped the page and where the insulting words were before; red and black ink took its place and spread across the front and down into the folds.
“The Marauder’s Map?” Lily asked as she read the front.
“It’s a map of Hogwarts. It shows you every person, in every room. Well, except one room. Look here.” James pointed to a spot in the map that was empty. “Peter, go outside the room for a moment.” Peter jumped up from his spot and disappeared out the door.
Just as the door shut, a pair of footprints appeared with the name Peter Pettigrew underneath them. They paced in front of a blank wall before disappearing as he entered the room.
“How did you manage this?” Lily asked, astounded as she unfolded the whole map. “Is that a secret passageway?” She pointed to a path that led away from the castle. She traced it to the One-Eyed Witch statue and gasped.
“That’s why you always seemed to come out of nowhere when I passed that statue! You were in the secret passage?” James nodded a smile on his face.
“That day, were you waiting for me to come out of there?” Lily nodded and a small blush crept onto her face.
“Well, I had seen you so many times there before that I hope you might be there.” Sirius and Peter laughed, Remus smacking them both in the head making Lily blush even more.
James cleared his throat. “Mischief Managed.” Lily watched as the ink disappeared and James asked,
“What else can we show her guys?”
The four exchanged a mischievous look, grins on their faces.
