It was surprising that the man was already conscious after almost dying in a car accident just the other night. He was comatose for a day and his brain scan revealed a traumatic injury. When he opened his eyes, he looked at me and I can sense he was still adjusting from his surroundings. I gazed at his eyes and it was empty. Kind of like looking inside a dark, empty well; there was nothing in his black eyes except darkness. I smiled at him to make him feel at ease. I almost thought he will smile back at me but his face twisted in such a way that only mean one thing: agonizing pain.

He was immediately injected with morphine to relieve him from the tormenting ache inside his head. I don't know why because I have seen a lot of patients holler in pain, but seeing him wailing affected me in a way that I have never been before. I wanted to comfort him, help him feel better. After a minute or so, the morphine started kicking in, his face relaxed and then he fell asleep.

"Gail, good thing you were here when this happened. It was surprising that he was already conscious this fast." Dr. Walters said.

"Yes, Doc. I was here to check up on him. He just woke up and after a few minutes he just started screaming." I replied.

"Well, that pain he felt was a result of the Traumatic Brain Injury he had. The CT scan showed an injury in the hippocampus which as we know is the seat of memory. So we are really considering amnesia, although we are not sure if it affected his short-term or long-term memory. As of now, he seemed fine. Let's observe him for a day or so, and if everything proved to be fine, he can be transferred to a regular room."

Dr. Walters and the other nurses left the room. I feared that this would happen to D (I decided to call him D because of his cute dimples.) Amnesia would be a very big problem for him because he had no identification, and as of the moment, no one inquired yet about a missing, handsome, young man. I have yet to confirm that to Mr. Sherman.

I left the room and went to the nurses' station. I called the Maineclear Police Station to talk to Mr. Sherman. "Hi, this is Gail Alyson Williams from Maineclear General Hospital. May I speak with Mr. Sherman please."

"Hold a sec, Gail, this is Bernard."

"Oh, okay. Thank you Bernard."

I waited and I heard from the receiver that Bernard was calling Mr. Sherman. "Hello, Gail? Is this you?" he asked.

"Yes, Mr. Sherman. I am calling to inquire about the incident last night at the highway? Are there any developments in the investigation?"

"I knew you would call, I've been meaning to call you earlier. As of the moment, we are still trying to find out how the crash happened. According to the toxicology test, the man wasn't under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Initial report says that his car might have an engine problem which was also the reason it exploded."

"Has anyone looked for him since the incident?" I asked.

"Sadly, none. We already posted his name on our database and reported it to nearby police stations but no one came to inquire about him. We haven't found any identification yet because his car burned. Although we are still trying to salvage anything that would help in identifying him."

"Thank you very much for the information Mr. Sherman. I'll just keep in touch with you for any updates."

"Don't mention it. Yeah, sure. Just give me a ring. I will also call you if anything comes up."

I thanked Mr. Sherman again and then we hung up. I was wondering why no one was looking for him. If I was her girlfriend, I'd be crazy right now (but sadly, I wasn't) so I brushed the thought away. I felt foolish for thinking that way about him. I can't really tell why I'm so drawn to him. He really was attractive but I have seen a lot of attractive men in my life. Definitely, there is more to him than being really good-looking that pulls me closer.

I considered every option I could do to help him; in this digital age, it would be easy to find out everything about everyone thru the internet, if only I knew even his name but I don't, so.. that idea would be counterproductive. Or I could also try posting his picture around town. Although I doubt anyone around here will recognize him because he was obviously not from small-town Maineclear. I haven't seen him before and if he has any relative here I'm sure there would be someone who will be looking for him. I sighed. There were really no options left but to rely on the police.

I decided to continue with my duties for the night. My mind was occupied on how I can help D but nothing came up. Before the end of my shift, I checked up on him in his room. He was still asleep although he was groaning. It grew louder I thought he was having a nightmare, so I shook him a little. His eyes opened, but, unlike the emptiness I saw when he first woke up, his eyes were now full of hurt and fear. He looked away but I still noticed tears starting to build up in his eyes. I exited his room silently, wondering what he just dreamed about.
