CHAPTER ONE

I'm part of a vision. A vision of a perfect world. Everyone is perfect. Flawless. We are not allowed to be anything else. Out choices are not our own. All our choices are made by the all powerful government.

My life is a routine, day in, day out. There are no changes. There is nothing new. Every day, like everyone else, I don my uniform. My ordinary skirt, shirt, shoes, and bow. The same as all the other girls wear. No one is unique.

Each morning I eat oatmeal, for lunch I eat chicken soup. For supper, I change into my pretty red dress like every other girl and eat meatloaf. People in the government are lucky. They get this strange type of meat they call "turkey" and delicious exotic "cranberry sauce."

After my supper I practice. I practice being perfect. On guitar, I never miss a chord. My playing is flawless. I surpass all my teachers, just as the government said I would. I can never play what I really want to though. The government will not allow it.

Next, I feed my robin Andy, the little bird in the cage in the corner of my room. The government chose him for me. For that, I am grateful. The one thing I truly wanted that they gave to me. Everything else about me is fake. But I'm okay with that. Because I have to be.

My mother Delphine tells me not to voice my thoughts. For that is an act of treason. The government would kill me. I would be taken from everything I hold close to me. I do not fear that though, nobody does. Because we are not allowed to.
