He jolted awake at the sound of the door opening. In came a few familiar Hydra agents; whom he nicknamed the Three Stooges. They must have been assigned to keep a watch on him. Bucky felt grateful at least have some familiar faces.
"Stand up." One of them demanded in Russian.
"Good morning fellas." Bucky replied back, mockingly.
He stood up, and the Hydra agents surrounded him. One stood to his left, one to his right, and one in back of him. They marched him out of the door and down a long hallway. The routine that he was forced to follow consisted of getting woken up, and then being led down the hallway. If they turned left, he knew that he was heading to Russian lessons. If they turned right, it was training for 5 hours. After, he was led back to his cell, where he would be confined until the next morning.
"Na lleva" an agent called.
He recognized this as Russian for left. They turned the corner and he was shoved into a small room, where the Russian woman sat at a table, waiting for him.
She was an older woman; Bucky assumed she was probably in her 60's. Her mousy brown hair matched with the color of the shirt she was wearing. He noticed her clothing; which looked dirty and tattered. He still didn't know who she was, or what her name was, or why on Earth she would want to work for Hydra; but he intended to find out.
He walked in and sat down on the chair across the table.
"Dobre ootra" She began to say.
"Good morning" She translated back in English, with a heavy accent.
"Repeat back to me" She said.
Bucky repeated this phrase, over and over, until she thought his pronunciation was up to par.
They sat like this, for a few hours repeating important phrases, conjugations and going over spelling and grammar until he could speak an adequate conversation in Russian.
"Hello, how are you?" he asked slowly, cautious of his pronunciation.
"Very well. How are you?" She replied.
They talked about weather, food; anything that Bucky could understand. He knew that although his situation was bad, he was grateful to still be able to talk to someone. Although not enjoyable, he liked receiving Russian lessons. This woman was the only person who treated him like a human being, and not a prisoner. She deserved more than to be locked in this cell all day. They both did.
Curious about her, he asked, "What's your name?"
Her eyes turned distant and she replied, "It's not important. Lets go over verbs."
Confused as to why she wasn't answering, he spoke again.
"Why can't you tell me your name?" He asked
This time, her face contorted in fear. She began to shake her head over and over, holding it in her hands. Her voice shakily replied, "please, stop asking."
She continued freaking out and began talking in Russian, but nothing that Bucky could understand. It seemed as if she was saying a hundred words per second.
"I..I'm sorry, I didn't mean to..." He stuttered. Then he realized.
This woman was probably a prisoner just like he was. Hydra took people from everywhere, and forced them as their prisoners. She probably wasn't allowed to tell him her name, or where she's from, or anything about herself for that matter. Her only use was teaching Bucky Russian... and who knew what Hydra needed that for. But he knew that this woman was probably as scared as he was.
He leaned in closely to her, making his voice a low whisper to prevent any Hydra guard from hearing him, and asked, "Are you a prisoner here?"
She slowly moved her hands away from her face, and looked into Bucky's eyes. Her eyes looked hopeless and sad; and she began to nod her head.
So Hydra is taking innocent people.
"It's ok, I am too. I have people looking for me.... I'll make sure to get you out of here." He said, putting his hand on hers. He felt terrible. She probably lost her family, her home, her everything.
She looked up and smiled hopefully at Bucky, and for the first time in a while, he felt like a hero again. He only wished he was side-by-side with Steve to tell this woman she was going to be okay.
Assuming that she had been prisoner for a while, Bucky asked her if she knew what was going to happen to him.
She looked at him sadly, letting out a sigh.
"I heard guards say they make you killer..." She attempted, in English.
"You get training?" She asked.
Bucky replied yes, and she continued.
"They train you for killing. Then use you. Like they use all of us." She said.
"All of us..?" He asked, but was then interrupted by the sound of a screaming woman.
"What was that?" He asked frantically.
"New girl came in from Poland. Sounds like they put her in chair." The Russian woman replied, sighing.
Bucky realized he knew exactly who she was talking about. He saw that girl coming in; getting pushed by guards into the cell next to him. And he knew all too well where her screams were coming from. If they put her in the chair, then she must not have been having a good time. He remembered when he was put in the chair, a few weeks ago. Hydra must be showing her the ropes.
Him and the Russian woman sat there - silently - for minutes; forced to listen to the girl's loud and torturous screams.
"Who is she?" He asked. This woman seemed to know everything.
"Her family and village killed for vibranium." She replied.
Again, a deep wave of sympathy settled over Bucky as he realized how horrible Hydra really was.
"Why is she here?" He asked.
"Same as you." She replied, then added,
"She will be trained to be killer."
