I stayed mostly to myself for the rest of the summer vacation. After what had happened at Flourish and Blotts, not many people had decided to bother me anyways. On occasion, when we would walk around the muggle town or go down to the paddock, the twins would ask about what Lucius Malfoy had meant when he had called me Leira. My clueless act seemed to work well enough for now.
Now that the last day of summer was here, I found that I didn't want it to pass. It still hadn't made much sense to me why everyone wanted to return to Hogwarts after a few months of vacation. I couldn't help but feel oddly restricted without my magic however. It had always been so accessible to me living in the loophole of the Ministry's "no magic for minors" rules.
"Hey," George poked his head into my room, "Mum called dinner."
I slipped my bookmark between the pages of one of my newly purchased books. Ginny clicked her trunk shut and made her way out of the room. She had been talking nearly all day about how much fun everyone had on the last day of summer. Fred and George both leaned against opposite sides of the threshold in wait for me to join them. When I tried to pass they grabbed my biceps and pulled me back into the bedroom.
"We need to talk." George said.
"We expect some answers this time." sighed Fred.
I rolled my eyes and leaned back against the wall. It was obvious what they wanted to know. Lucius Malfoy has remained one of their main talking points since we got home. I was almost willing to take Fred up on his offer to hit him.
"What now?"
"About what Lucius called you -" George started.
"I told you that I'm not talking about this. Lucius Malfoy is insane. Now can we go eat?"
"Is that it?" Fred asked.
I look to him from the side of my vision. My arms crossed in front of my chest as I let out a sigh. Out of everyone around, I wouldn't put it past the twins to dig into every little detail until my past has been dug up. They may not be doing it on purpose, but once they find out no one can take it back.
"You don't believe me?" I cocked an eyebrow, "I thought I could trust the two of you to place your trust in me."
"We do trust you." Fred frowned.
"Then why are the two of you incessantly coming to me with the same question. Has my answer changed once? Neither of you have protested which means it hasn't. You either trust me or you don't. Which will it be?"
"We do." Fred answered first.
"You know we do." George nodded.
"Great," I nod and push off of the wall, "Let's go to dinner then."
"We have a plan for after dinner." said George.
"Wouldn't want you to miss it." Fred said.
Fred's voice sounds restrained. I examine his face which looked oddly constrained. It broke my heart to lie to him. It tore me apart knowing just how long I've been lying to him. The inner turmoil is written clear on his face. He will need to wipe his features clear before going in front of his family. They will be able to see right through him otherwise.
"I think I want to remain in one piece before I go back to school." I said.
"I promise you'll make it back fine. Now the others may be a different story." Fred grinned.
"You really know how to convince someone, don't you?" I laughed lightly.
"You got out of bed. Must be doing something right."
