Somewhere in Alaska, Loki sat at the edge of his seven year old daughter's bed. "Daddy?" She asked. He looked at her. "Yes?"

"May I have a story?"

Loki nodded and gently stroked her hair. "Once there was..a man. A very lonely man. We'll call him L."

Katherine nodded and snuggled into her quilt.

"L lived in the dark, because no one had ever shown him light. One day, after he had had another difficult day, he saw something that was so beautiful he didn't believe it to be true."

"What was it?" His daughter asked in wonder.

"It was a lady. Her name was O. She was always surrounded by light, and L couldn't believe his eyes. He fell in love with O. But she was dying. And she wouldn't let him use his magical powers to save her." He looked at his daughter, who clutched the blanket tightly and frowned. "Daddy, keep going." She urged.

"Although," he continued. "She held a special kind of light in her stomach. It was a baby. A baby who they named K. And in that moment there was so much light in L's world. But it dimmed. Because O was very sick. She was so sick she couldn't lift a finger to hold his hand, or to hug K. But L promised he would watch K and keep her safe. Eventually O's light went out, and it was dark again." Loki stopped and looked away from his daughter.

"And? Daddy, and?"

"And then he remembered his promise. And L and K moved somewhere safe. And even though it was just a sliver, there was a little bit of light in his otherwise dark world. And it will grow and grow forever. The end."

Katherine clapped but then hit his arm. "In every story you tell the beautiful lady always dies!" She crossed her arms in a huffy.

"Well, if you're mad I guess I'll just turn off the light and leave.." Loki teased as he walked towards the door.

"No!" Katherine shouted. She jumped out of bed and hugged him tightly. "Goodnight, Daddy. I love you."

He leaned down and hugged her back. "Goodnight, my sweet. I love you too." She climbed back into bed and Loki turned off the light. He walked out to the small living room and sat down at the table. The only light was the dim sliver that came out from under Katherine's door, from her night light.

It was otherwise dark.
