Chapter 1.

PIPER'S POV

"Sweetheart, are you ok?" I heard my father ask. I was lost in my thoughts. I was thinking about my mother. She had died a recently in a car accident. And today was the funeral. I was remembering what we talked about a few days before she died.

3 days earlier.

I got home from school, it was Friday. I was so excited for the weekend. Mum and I decided to go shopping.

"Mum, I’m home. Are you here?" I walked in the living room looking for my mum. Before I could call her again I was suddenly startled from behind. I jumped in surprise when I found it was my mum trying to scare me. It was kind of our thing. The only place I could be myself was at home with my family. It was only me and my parents. I was an only child.

"MUM! Ha-ha. You’re always scaring me. One day I will get you back you know that right?" I laughed.

"Sweetie, you can never scare me. I’m your mum. I will always know when you will strike. Ha-ha" my mum started laughing hysterically and I couldn't help but smile. I loved it when my mum was happy and laughing. It made me feel safe.

"Sure thing mum. But I have a master plan." I smiled.

Mum tried to fix my hair a bit. "Piper, why do you keep your hair so messy? And you never wear any makeup.  And even though I love your glasses I think they are a bit nerdy. I’m only telling you what I think would help you gets friends."  Shock appeared on my face when she told me this. Sure I didn’t have any friends, but that’s only because I didn’t want the distraction. I looked at her and was about to lose it but I calmed myself down.

"Look mum, I’m in high school. Not at a rock concert." Even though I wish I was. That’s when I would wear make-up and get all dressed up.

"Piper, honey, but you are so beautiful. I only want what’s best for you." mum sounded so concerned. But I’ve told her already that I’m not going to glamour myself up for school.

Ever since I was little, I was singing my heart out. My parents always thought I would be a big star one day, but I didn’t want all that fame. I told them that I just wanted a normal life. And an education was part of that normal life. I didn’t want to mix the two together.

My parents always tried to persuade me in the direction of fame but I always tried to ignore them. They got me an electric guitar for my 13th birthday 4 months ago. It was metallic with an amazing image of a grim reaper on the back.

Before I lost the plot, I decided to change the subject. "So mum, what are we doing tonight?"

"Well, I thought we could go to dinner. How about it?" she asked. I paused for a second pretending to think and said, "Yes. Of course it would be so much fun. Are we going casual or dressy?"
