Chapter 4

I woke up Sunday morning refreshed. I stretched and got out of bed. I walked over to the bathroom to wash my face. I brushed my teeth and went downstairs.

On my way down, I heard people talking. I recognized on one of the voices and that belonged to my dad. I walked over to where the chatter was coming from and I opened the door. About four other men were in the room with him. They all turned to look at me when they heard the door open.

They all looked the same. Short hair, brown eyes but there was only one of the guys that had blue eyes. They all wore their suits and had all the briefcases next to their chairs. They had paper scattered everywhere.

“Well good morning piper. I didn’t think you’d be up until later.” My dad finally said smiling. I looked at him and smiled back. “Good morning dad, seriously? What time is it?” I said confused. I looked over to the clock that was hanging on the wall. It was 9:45 in the morning. Shit, I guess I didn’t have such a lousy sleep after everything that happened last night. And I wasn’t tired one bit.

“Since I’m up, would you like me to make you all coffee, or perhaps tea?” I asked, I think they probably could use a hot drink. They looked hard at work. My dad was lawyer for all kinds of cases. He worked on anything he could get his hands on. He would usually come back from the office late, and he’d always come home tired. We would spend as much time as possible with each other, when he had time of course. I got used to dad not being around.

“Sure sweetheart. Just make a pot of coffee and bring it out when you finish. Thank you.” He smiled and returned to the meeting, and so the other men joined them.

I walked over to the kitchen and started making the coffee. I brought out a tray and placed coffee cups on it. When the coffee finished I took out to my dad.

The rest of the day passed and it was uneventful.

Monday came a little too soon. I was hoping that Paul didn’t recognize me when he sees me. We had first period English together today. I walked in and sat in my usual spot at the front. Then he walked in. He was the last to arrive to class. He looked at me with a look that made my heart race. Oh god what if he was thinking if he recognized me or not. If he did recognize me he didn’t say anything, as he went to his seat. Class finished, and I stayed back to ask the teacher a question on the homework. When I was finished I walked out of class and he was there. Outside the door, waiting for me. Oh shit! He knows. How will I talk myself out of this?

“Hey, it’s piper yeah?” he asked a little confused.

I looked at him hoping he didn’t recognize me. “Yeah, it is.” Talking to him was weird. We never really spoke. Well he never really spoke to me or anyone outside of his group for that matter.

“Thought so, did I see you out of town Saturday night by chance?” he asked hoping I said yes. This must have been playing on his mind all weekend.

I tried hard to put my game face on and lie, “not that I recall. Why?” that sounded convincing. Hope he bought it.

“Really, because I could have sworn I saw you at my cousin’s party. Are you sure you weren’t there.” Crap, she was his cousin? Keep lying. Don’t back down now.
