It was about two weeks later when I was finally able to work. My side still hurt, but I could bear the pain for the time being. I didn't expect to be at Phantomhive Manor for very long.
It was my first day and I was going to meet the other servants. I had only met Sebastian, but he barely talked to me when he came to change my bandages. I looked over myself in the mirror, making sure I was ready. I was wearing the maids' uniform that Sebastian had given me. It was a dark blue dress with a white apron, black leggings, and black boots. I pulled the bonnet over my black hair, but thinking it looked stupid, threw it back on the bed. Sebastian had told me it was optional.
Looking straight into my green eyes, I gave myself a pep talk, "This isn't something I usually do. This is way outside my comfort zone, but I can do this. It'll be easy. I won't be here for more than a month. Just don't fight with the others, and I'll be fine!"
There was a knock at the door and Sebastian asked through the wood, "Are you ready, Willow?"
I opened the door and nodded, "I'm ready."
"Good. Please, follow me," he instructed. He began to walk away and I followed him, my anxiety rising. I was never good at meeting new people. "I must warn you that the servants here aren't exactly... normal."
"Well, what does that mean? Should I be worried?" I asked, suddenly alarmed. From Martin's description, the servants were supposed to be pretty scary. At the same time, it was a valuable time to see if I could squeeze any secrets out of the butler.
"I'll let you see for yourself," he stated. I sighed and nodded, unhappy. He could have just explained the type of situation I was about to walk into! "In here," he told me, opening a door. I looked inside and thought it was the kitchen by the stoves and ovens. I nodded in thanks as he held the door open and I walked inside.
Standing in front of a table were five people. One was a man who looked a little older than me. He had short blonde hair with welding goggles around his neck. He wore a chef's coat, but I worried why he needed the goggles...
Another man was there, and he had white hair that went down to his shoulders and purple eyes. He was smiling at me, and his canine teeth seemed to be the most prominent thing about him. He wore a suit and had a collar around his neck. I noticed a chain attached to it, and when I followed it, I saw that a woman was holding it. A leash?
The third was an older man. He had gray hair and a suit. He wore a spectacle and sat drinking tea. I didn't really know what to think of him, other than that he was a cute little old man.
The woman looked my age. She had glasses, so I couldn't see her eyes, and red hair. I knew she was the other maid since she was wearing the exact same uniform as me, though she was wearing the bonnet that matched.
Finally, there was a teenage boy. He couldn't have been older than sixteen. He also had blonde hair and large green eyes. He wore plaid pants, a white shirt, and a straw hat around his neck. He seemed the most friendly of all of them.
The five stood tall, apart from the one drinking tea, but I could tell they were just trying to look impressive. It was too overdone. Ciel and Sebastian probably didn't want me to think bad of them so soon. I knew that by not normal, it meant they were crazy. But was it crazy in a good or bad way? That was what worried me the most.
Sebastian introduced, "You all, this is the new maid, Willow Porter. Willow, these are the other servants."
I faked a smile to cover my nerves, "It's nice to meet you. I hope we'll get along well."
The girl grinned, "I'm Mey-Rin. I work here as a maid as well. The one standing next to me is Pluto. " She motioned to the man with white hair. "He doesn't talk much. He's like our security guard." Pluto? It sounds more like a dog's name, to be honest, I thought. "The one drinking tea is Tanaka. He doesn't do too much work, due to a medical condition."
The teen said, "I'm Finni! It's a pleasure to meet you, Willow!" My smile couldn't help but turn genuine. He had a way of making people happy. I could tell.
"And I'm Bard. I'm the chef!" the one with the cigarette exclaimed.
"You're from America?" I asked. I couldn't help it! It just slipped out of my mouth! I could tell his accent wasn't British.
"How did ya know?" Bard questioned, astonished that I knew. Everyone was suddenly looking at me with scrutinizing eyes. I couldn't afford to answer the question wrong.
"A couple had moved to London from America, but wasn't able to find jobs. They ended up on the streets, like me. I only knew them for a short while, but I can tell the difference between an American accent and an English one," I lied. I was actually sent over to assassinate a businessman over in Boston, Massachusetts who had been intervening in Martin's trading relationships. I had only been there for a week, but it had been fun! I had only ever once been to America, but I hoped to go again one day.
Bard walked over to me and smiled, "Ya're a pretty one. Shame no one ever bothered to stop and help ya before." He moved to stroke my arm when Sebastian slapped his hand away. "Ow!"
"No touching the new maid. It's unsightly and will make a bad impression," Sebastian scolded, then apologized to me, "I'm quite sorry, Willow. Let us leave so I may show you around the manor." He smiled a dazzling smile. It was supposed to make me agree with him right away, but it didn't really work on me like that. There was something strange about Sebastian. I couldn't put my finger on it. Something shady.
I nodded, "If you insist, thank you." His smiled dropped a little, like I hadn't had the excitement and enthusiasm in my voice that I should have. I made it sound like I only said yes not to be rude. I wondered why that bothered him so.
He advised, "Then, follow me and stay close. Do not wander. You can get lost if you don't know your way." I nodded once and followed him out the door, leaving the four servants in the kitchen.
The only one I was suspicious of was Sebastian. I guessed that was why I had to kill him.
