I waited another hour before leaving my room. I still wasn't sure if Sebastian would be asleep, but if I had went to the library right after our argument, then it would have looked suspicious. Not that I probably didn't already.
I decided taking a candle would be too much of a risk, so I allowed the faint moonlight to guide my way. I still managed to bump into things, but I hadn't made too much noise. I was used to that kind of thing. Once I reached the library doors, I opened and closed them softly.
I zoomed to the phone and dialed the number quickly. The fury I had been suppressing was having a relapse. I had dialed his private number, which went directly to his desk phone. He usually stayed up until at least three in the morning, but that could have changed while I was gone.
It stopped ringing and a male voice said, "Lord Martin Farr." My lip curled.
"Martin," I said through clenched teeth. I couldn't even get the words out I was so angry that I couldn't.
"Oh, Widow, you're alive! When I heard that Ray was dead, I figured it was you, but I wasn't sure," Martin told me, sounding happy.
"No thanks to you! You almost killed me twice!" I accused, trying my best to keep my voice down.
"But you aren't dead," he pointed out.
"You stabbed me in the middle of the night far away from the mansion! It was a miracle the butler even found me! Then, you sent Ray to do my work for me, also almost killing me!" I exploded. I wished I could have reached through the phone and strangled him.
He said indifferently, "Well, I want the Earl dead either way. How is everything going?"
"What type of job is this, anyways? The butler seems suspicious, but the rest of the servants can't do anything! You've sent me to a circus!" I exclaimed. "You're just wasting my time. There is obviously nothing for me to study."
"I want you to stay there and watch over everything. You might have missed something. Trick them into showing you their moves," Martin instructed.
I challenged, "And if I refuse to continue working here?" I heard him sigh. He hated when I was being difficult, but I didn't care. He had risked my life twice for the job already, and I didn't want a third.
All he said was, "Ten."
"What?"
"I'll raise your pay to £10,000," he elaborated. My mouth fell open and I almost dropped the phone. Ten thousand?! That was a lot of money for a job as simple as that one! I could do so much with that much money with me!
"Fine. I'll do it," I agreed, saying it cooly but still in shock.
"I shouldn't even have to raise your pay," he muttered, sounding slightly disgusted.
I demanded hotly, "Why do you say that?"
Martin answered, "Because I saved you."
"Because you were the one who adopted me when I was four? Yeah, right. I don't care if you're legally my father. You don't act like it. I owe you nothing," I spat, my voice acid. I slammed the phone down on the receiver.
Saved my life his ass. He ruined it.
