I scanned the article I was reading. Nine people mysteriously disappeared from London. Yes, London. My parents are obsessed with anything in England… especially London and Scotland. They go there every six months, on vacation… or so they say. They never let me go with them and I don’t know why. Who wouldn’t want their average American teenager to go to England with them?
My name is Natalie Hailey. I’m fourteen. I have sea green eyes and dark hair. My father says my hair is dark brown and my mother says it’s black. My mother is always nagging me about being skinny. She tells me that I need to eat more and bulk up. I told her to mind her own goddamn business. I was grounded for a week for that one.
I am an only child, but I’ve always wanted a little brother. It’d be fun to take care of someone younger than me. I always wondered what it’d be like to have a sibling.
My father broke through my deep thoughts. “Natalie?” His voice echoed through my head and I put the news paper down. “Yes, Daddy?” I asked sweetly. My father was a sucker for the ‘daddy’ trick. When I was eight I guilted him into buying me a two hundred dollar kitten. It ran away within a week.
“We need to talk; you, your mother, and I. We need to have an important conversation.” He took his reading glasses off and leaned back in his chair. “Okay Daddy. I’ll see you after school. We can all talk then, Love you!” I got up and kissed his cheek. I turned to my mother who had stopped washing the dishes.
“Mom? Are you going to leave the water running all day?” My voice was sarcastic. She slowly pushed down on the handle and the water stopped. Something was wrong.
“Natalie, I will bring you to school later.” My father spoke again. “Okay. This must be big. Did someone die?” My hands flew over my mouth at the thought. What if something bad had happened to someone in my family? Or one of my friends?
“No! No, no sweetie. No one died. But um… someone was born.” My mother said. She turned around and sat down in the chair next to me at our round breakfast table.
My thoughts perked up a bit. Maybe I had a new cousin I never knew about! “Who was it Mom!?” I asked eagerly.
“It was better off this way honey. We didn’t tell you because we didn’t want you to miss her and you two were so different. We’re so very sorry we kept this from you. We see now that it was the complete wrong thing to do.” My mother said quickly.
“Natalie,” My father started. “This is why we’ve been going to London so much. We go every six months to see her. Do you understand at all? I don’t know if you know what I might be saying.” His expression was curious and very nervous. Both of my parents were sweating and looked like they were going to cry. Why can’t they just tell me? I’m old enough to handle it!
“No. I don’t get it! Just spit it out! I don’t care! I’ll get over whatever it is! I’ll deal with it! Just tell me!” I yelled.
“You have a sister!” My mother blurted. My eyes widened and I almost fainted. “Honey, you have a twin sister. She lives in England because she goes to school in Scotland. She lives with her friend Ginny in the summer time. Monica is special sweetie. She has special powers that not many people have. She goes to school to learn how to use them. It’s a special school.”
My head spun faster and I took deep breaths. I only knew a few things. Which were: I had a sister. That sister was called Monica. Monica had special powers… whatever that means. I figured she was crazy or something.
“Okay.” I murmured, trying to wrap my mind around everything. “Natalie, do remember when you were five and we went to the aquarium?” My father asked me. I shook my head up and down. I remembered.
