The silence manifested as the moon rose on its throne. The ground dampened by the rain on this cloudless hour. There was no shade, no roof for her to find respite, none to help in this hour of fright. Standing before the king of sky, she stared at it as though pleading; her tears have already mixed with the rain.

Clothes drenched and arms getting tired, she fell to her knees as she allowed the body to roll away from her, lifeless. Frantic, she scurried slowly towards the body, unable to keep still as she tried to reach out for it. Crawling through the mud, she grabbed her friend and pulled him to her chest, then cradled him there.

'I warned you of this Hailey.'

She loosened her grip and looked into his chiselled face, asleep as though there was hardly anything wrong with him. She brushed his damp fringe away from his pale face as the moon caressed his cheeks; a smile slowly crept on her tearful face as she tried hard not to break even further.

'You closed your ears to my voice and this was the consequence.'

Trying to get up, the weight of her companion would not allow her legs to stand, far too tired of walking as much as her arms were sore for carrying him for too long. His short and curly raven hair no longer curled in the right places as Hailey stared at his face, recalling the memories she had with this wonderful person.

Her memories flew to the deepest crevice of her mind to find the very first day they met, to the very last time they had spent time together; the letters, the calls, the long walks in the forest, all of them she remembered. From the smile on his face to the lone tears that escaped his droopy eyes, every detail of it, she treasured.

Now, she will never see those again.

'You shouldn't have associated with someone like her - far too meddlesome for his own sake.'

"Shut up," Hailey whispered as she tried to bar the whispers inside her head. "You don't know anything."

'Have I not told you to stay away from him? Because it could lead to what he is now? Have I not said that he shouldn't know about your secret?'

"Be quiet," she whispered again as hope gradually escaped her body, "I don't want to hear your sermon."

'As you wish child, but know that this... will repeat upon your mistake.'

Clenching her jaw, Hailey closed her eyes shut as she tried not to hear the voice inside her head; the sadness in her has overflowed as much as hate resided in her heart, where guilt has made a home of it. Hugging his body to her, she sat there under the pouring rain and cried her heart out.

"I'm sorry," her shaky voice came out as her lips nearly grazed his cold ear, "I never meant for you to die."

Eyelids darting open, she fell back from her sitting position as she saw the autumn leaves jolt from the earth and fall carefully down. Her back hit the soft ground as she felt her heartbeat exhaust itself inside her chest; her breathing echoed against her ears as she cupped her face.

"You lost focus," Cecilia spoke after a long exhale then turned to her, "Everything alright, Hailey?"

Hailey slid her palms down, enough to see Cecilia, "I'm fine, Cecil."

"Are you sure?" she queried as plopped an arm over to check on her, "You've been out of it lately."

Hailey hid her frown, "Yeah, I'm sure," she sat back up and faked a smile, "Just a little tired."
