The song above is a scene setter. It's called Lies, by Evanescence.
A tall girl with long, dark purple hair, wearing a school uniform, climbs the stairs onto the porch of a ratty old house. The once white paint, now peeling, is so filthy that it appears brown. The porch and front yard are covered in junk. The girl opens the door and enters the house. Once she closes the door behind her, she looks around in the entrance hallway, willing her eyes to adjust to the lack of light.
Once she is able to see properly, the purple haired girl scrunches up her nose in disgust. The floor is littered in broken glass and garbage, most of which are empty containers of alcohol. Ignoring the smell to the best of her ability, she walks through the hallway and enters the living room. Despite the name, most people would find it hard to believe that anyone could possibly live in this room. The girl clears the rubbish from the moth-bitten couch and sits down, grabbing the remote and pointing it at the small television in front of her.
"Good afternoon!" a female voice says. Once the screen clears up, a small, green haired woman with purple eyes becomes visible. "Yes, it is, Kusa-Chan!" laughs a large man with blue hair and golden eyes. "Today I am here with the rising pop sensation, Ereganto Kusa!" these words cause a loud applause from an offscreen audience, only to be abruptly ended as the girl changes the channel.
"Sarah!" calls a male voice, causing the girl to roll her eyes.
"Yeah, Dad?"
"Are you watching the television?" the voice has an unapproving tone to it.
"No, Dad." Sarah sighs, turning off the tv. "Because you're too damn lazy to work so we can pay for good cable." she mumbles, heading up the stairs to her room. "Spending all the money you get on beer."Sarah slams her bedroom door behind her and looks around at the freshly painted walls. It was hard to believe that this room was part of the same house. The floors clean, the bed made, it was Sarah's only sanctuary in all of Japan.
Sarah sets down her book-bag on her bed and sits beside it, opening the bag to reveal its contents. Two textbooks and five notebooks. Folders and binders. Sarah digs through the bag before pulling out a wallet. She opens up the wallet to take out a small scrap of paper.
Sarah unfolds the piece of paper to reveal a gorgeous picture of a beautiful woman surrounded by cherry blossom trees. The person who took the photo had caught the woman at the perfect moment. The wind blowing her purple hair and the flowers in the gust of wind. The woman looking up at the trees in wonder, her eyes a shade of pink to rival the blossoms themselves. Her smile seemed to give her an angelic glow.
Sarah runs her fingers over the woman's features, the beautiful picture bringing both a smile to her face, and tears to her eyes. She wipes away the unwelcome droplets with the sleeve of her uniform, before setting the photo on her dresser. "Miss you, Mom." she says, before turning back to her book-bag and taking out a notebook and a pencil.
She opens the notebook and touches the pencil to the paper. Before Sarah knows it, her hand begins to move of its own accord, the pencil tracing the lines and contours of the picture that the girl sees in her mind. Once she's done, she holds the notebook away from herself to admire her work...cherry blossoms. She writes something down, tears out the page, and sets it beside the photo of her mother. It reads 'In Loving Memory of Murasaki Sakura'.
Sarah's mother had died half a year ago in a car crash. Ever since that day, her father slowly grew worse and worse. He had removed every photo of his wife from the house. He removed all traces of Murasaki, in fact, except for the picture currently sitting on Sarah's dresser. He started drinking, developed anger issues, then lost his job. Afterwards, he began neglecting his duties, not only as a citizen, but as a father as well. The only time the man pays attention to her anymore is either when she is using up electricity, he needs something, or when he gets...angry.... Sarah reaches back into her book bag and begins on her homework.
