Sorry for being out so long, starting school just messed up my schedule. I had to take tests already on the first week and essays assignments were given out and so on. But it's a new week and I'm determined to finish this before the end of the month. This chapter ended up a little too long for my liking so I split it up, the second part will be posted later today!
It's Saturday and I have to face the inevitable. I luckily met Matthias but now I have to go home to help with dinner and greet our oh so gracious guests.
"See you later." I wave as I smile at Matthias and he nods. It was a short meeting, he didn't ask why I wanted to meet, he just complied and showed up which I'm grateful for. It was just filled with talking and laughing, something that unwinded me before I had to go.
"Oh!" I hear as I start to walk and I spin around to see an old lady. She stood a little arched with her curly gray hair and wrinkles everywhere, making her look like a sweet old grandma. "It's so refreshing to see couples out and about. Makes me reminisce about my dear husband." She gushes as Matthias raises his eyebrows at me, not knowing what to do.
I gave a little shrug and I raise my eyebrows, what can we do? We can't tell her we're not a couple. Who knows what she'll do or say, she might think of this as that thing and report us, making everything complicated and unnecessary. I give a small smile at her words, we looked like a couple? Well we were walking together before, I guess it's easy to assume.
"You two look perfect for each other." The old lady enthuses, crows feet appearing around her eyes. I look back and forth at her and Matthias. She realizes the situation she's put herself in and quickly says "oh dear, I'm sorry for interrupting, I'll be on my way."
I feel myself blush at the words and I give a wide smile to look appreciative, saying thank you. I turn away from Matthias as he clears his throat and also says a quick thank you. I watch from the corner of my eyes as the old lady walks away. I bite the corner of my lip. Perfect? Us? We weren't even soul mates.
I scoff lightly, what am I even thinking. I peek at Matthias who stands awkwardly looking down at his shoes. I guess his soul mate was just lucky, he was the best, funny, outstanding, whimsical, and just dauntless. The way hair always catches the wind and holds on for a ride, the way the corners of his mouth are able to immediately curve up at any moment. I feel the heat rush back into my cheeks at my thoughts and briskly suck in all the air, holding my breath.
I guess this was the bond of friendship. I wonder what love will feel like then when the time comes. Was it more powerful than this? It had to be.
"Well um," Matthias says, still a little flabbergasted at the situation "I guess I'll see you." He gives a small wave and I realize that I'm suppose to be on the way home.
I nod and smile, this awkward moment'll be a topic and a laugh for another day. Turning away, I look at the time. I still have ten minutes, I power walk to my bike and cycle as quickly as possible to my house. My mom is going to freak out if I'm late, I said I was out with Lana and I was never late.
"Hey, hey, I'm here." I let out a breath of relief as I burst through the door of the kitchen, making Mikael and my mom jump a little.
"Right on time," my mom sighs as she turns on the stove. "This dinner is for you, you know?"
I give a nod. Sure, this in no way is for you to get to critique them. They'll be sure to do the same.
"Well, Nick and Diane are going to be here in an hour. I need you to chop the vegetables." My mom barks as she fills a pot with water. I look at my brother who shrugs and starts to grab the plates to set out, he was sadly dragged into this.
I sigh as I make my way up to the sink to rinse the eggplants and make a face. I can't believe she was making a dish with eggplants today of all days. She knew I didn't particularly like them, I guess she's just trying to impress the other family with one of her dishes.
After a good chopping and shedding of tears from the onions my mom shooed me up the stairs to change into something more what she called appropriate.
I sigh as I rummage through my closet to find something. I take out a more or less casual dress, it stopped just below my knees and showed an appropriate amount of skin. I think my mom would approve.
I come down the stairs just in time for my mom to finish cooking, she slips the last plate on the dinner table and takes off her apron. My brother comes up from behind and leans on my shoulder.
"Ready for this?" He asks, looking at the elegant looking dinner table. The plates, everything from the little forks that I had no idea were used for to the glass cups were perfectly placed. It's like Mikael measured everything for exact placement.
"It's all just a facade little brother. Just smile and it'll play out by itself, or not." I sigh. I fidget as I count down the minutes to the door bell ringing. This'll be nice. Right?
