The Story of Us

Nineteen

My phone buzzed as Sky and I sat outside tanning.

          One New Message: Nick

I felt a small smile for on my lips as I clicked the open button.

          Nick: Hey A! What up?

Amanda: Nothing much just tanning with Sky.

Nick: That must be awkward considering the whole Caleb thing.

Telling Nick about the whole Caleb situation had been beyond awkward. But Nick immediately became my support system, doing anything he could to make me smile.

Amanda: A little. It’s a huge relief he isn’t here right now. His cold shoulder is practically killing me.

Nick: :/ I’m sorry. Hey you want to meet up at Starbucks? I’ll pay (:

Amanda: Sounds perfect. How about 1 ish?

          Nick: Perfect. See you there.

I let out a sigh as I locked my phone. “Hey Sky?” I said trying to get her attention. She raised her hot pink sun glasses and turned her head to face me. “A friend of mine wants to meet up in an hour. Mind if I go?” I was already fiddling with my bag, ready to bolt.

“Yeah as long as you come over tomorrow. I rented Toy Story Three.” Sky replied a smile on her face.

“See you later!” I told her, getting up and heading to my house.

When I got to my room, I striped of my bikini and tossed it into a hamper. I pulled on a pair of jean shorts, and slipped on some old converse. I threw on a white v-neck, pulled my blonde hair into a pony tail, and headed to Starbucks.

When I walked into the Starbucks, I spotted Nick sitting at a table in the corner. He looked up from his phone, his eyes landing on me, a broad smile forming on his lips.

When I reached the table, Nick pulled me into a hug. He smelled strongly of the cologne he bought last time we hung out at the mall together.

“What do you want?” Nick asked me, motioning to the growing line.

“Um a grande vanilla bean frappuccino.” I replied. I sat down at our table, waiting for Nick to return with our drinks. I flicked through my cell phone, trying to occupy my time.

A plastic cup was set in front of me. I looked up to see Nick. I gave him a small smile as he sat across from me.

I cradled my Starbucks in my hands as Nick and I talked. I loved how easily I could talk to Nick. I could say anything and I know he wouldn’t judge me over it. Our conversations always just flowed.

“So no makeup today?” Nick asked, sipping on his drink. “I know I know, I look like the grudge.” I laughed holding my hands up defensively. “Not even close. You look beautiful, with or without makeup.” He replied. I bowed my head as I felt myself blush.

Soon Nick’s phone was going off, and his mom was demanding him to come home to babysit his little sister.

“Want a ride home? I have my dad’s car.” Nick told me. I did have quite the walk home. “Yeah sure.”

The drive seemed to go by in a blink. When we got to my house, Nick opened the door for me, and walked me to my front porch.

“Well let’s hang out again soon.” I said, as I gave him a little hug.

I turned to open my front door, but Nick placed his hand on my shoulder stopping me. I turned to look back at him.

“So this is going to sound completely crazy since we’ve only know each other for a little over a month, but I really like you. And I was wondering if you would go out on a date with me.” Everything Nick said was rambled together, but I heard him loud and clear.

I stood their shocked. Nick was a great guy, but did I really want a relationship right now considering everything that’s happened so far this summer with Caleb?

Caleb. I swear I could still feel his lips on mine. But then the way he treated me at the park floated in my mind. I wouldn’t be surprised he still remembers I exist by the way he ignore me.

Maybe I needed a guy like Nick to help me get over Caleb once and for all.

I took a deep breath and let the words flow out of my mouth.

“Yes, I’ll go on a date with you.”
